Okay, I must really be out of the loop. Of all the research I have done on Boxers there has been no mention of their being "aquatically challenged." Are Boxers really NOT good swimmers? I did not know this. Honestly though, do they really just not possess the ability to swim well? Interesting.

I have heard something about how the boxer's big chest isn't designed for swimming so some can't? But I personally don't know. My boxer, Sidda, can swim the short distance to get OUT of the pool. She hates it and it looks like she really struggles to swim.

It depends on the individual dog I think. I have one, Diva, that is an excellent swimmer - better than some noted water dogs that I have seen! She not only swims but dives/jumps off a bank into the river with all fours tucked up underneath her (like an aeroplane wheels retracting) and she is magic to watch. Diva has also now taken to ducking her head under the water completely if she spies something that she thinks might be of interest - like a coloured stone. Monty on the other hand doesn't mind the water and will stand in it up to his chest but there is not way those long legs of his will leave the safety of the river bed beneath him.

Diva was around water from a young age and also socialised with other dogs at the beach alot. I think she learnt to swim by accident really - just went out too far one day and had to doggy paddle back to shore!

Crosby has a huge chest and still swims really well. When we first got him a friend sent an e-mail telling us Boxers couldn't swim but its not true. He loves the water swims in the ocean, he also ducks his head under the water when he sees something interesting... very amusing, he is a real water baby.

My Billy can't / won't swim. He will wade in as far as he can but will NOT go out of his depth.

It's either because he is the wrong shape for swimming (big chest) or because he got a fight when he was 4 mths and nearly drowned. He doesn't have a fear of water though and so I think it is simply because he's the wrong shape!
