Don't feel so bad...Jade is the SAME way! My Dad's boxers were two very boistrous chaps, however, my little princess is a little stealth puppy. My step-son can get her to bark when he's playing with her, and she's developed this habit of low-crawling under our bed in which she'll bark like crazy when she's doing it, but just like you're little guy she NEVER barks at the door or other dogs while we're out walking. She's about 5 months now, and she's gotten better about being attentive when the door bell rings, and when we're out she acknowledges other dogs, but she never ever barks at them.
The good thing is she does know how to bark, and that's good enough for me for now. I think we should maybe count our blessings and be glad we don't have any "big mouths!"
