Nipping/Chewing

Hi everyone,

My boxer is 12 weeks old today birthdayic !! We love her to death and she is just the cutest thing ever. This is my husband and I first puppy.

What I am finding is she is biting the heck out of our hands and feet. The feet thing just started, and it HURTS!! We say NO, but I think sometimes we may get very upset when we YELL NO. HOw do you calm yourself when she is literally hurting you? My husband and I are trying so hard and I feel like I am failing.

We bought her her own bed to sleep in and she constantly chews it. I take it away from her if she does it. I don't know if that is teaching her not to or not. I feel like I should have read a ton of books before I purchased her. I have been reading up and researching to help my skills on training.

She is crated during the day (we both work 8 hours a day). She is WILD when we get home. Totally understandable since she has been locked up all day. My husband seems to be less patient than I am. I try and tell him she is only a puppy and does not know any better. Did anyone else experience this or am I the only freak out there:D

I did for sure! My girl would bite all the time. We just stuffed toys in her mouth. It might not be a bad thing that you make noise when she hurts you because I have read some are intune to those types of noises and will stop for a second. Make sure you have lots of toys. Get the book "The Culture Clash" and read about the bite inhibition for sure! It is not all bad that they bite when they are young. They learn how to have "softer" mouths this way.

Clarice is 4 months now and only bites when she is REALLY excited and she usually bites my sleeve or something instead of me.

I also am a new boxer owner he's 14 weeks and is constantly nipping at our hands and feet. We got him plenty of chew toys and are always correcting him. A simple firm NO! with a praise afterwards if he stops seems to be working, we have not broken him of this but we have seen an improvement

It sounds like you have a typical boxer puppy. It is okay to let them chew on you a bit, but if the bit too hard, yelp and leave the room for a minute. They will soon learn that if they bite too hard, they loose their play toy.

They are been lots of previous posts on biting, try doing a search on biting and you will find out lots of information.

I highly recommend the Culture Clash as well. It is a great book.
