Dog Breaks Boy's Arm

POSTED: 7:46 a.m. CDT October 20, 2003

PALO, Iowa -- Police in Palo say a boy's arm was broken when he was bit by a dog.

Benjamin Owens, 9, was bit on his right arm Thursday by a 9-month-old boxer owned by his sister, Brooke Owens.

Police said the dog was taken to the Cedar Valley Humane Society, where it was euthanized at the request of the family and authorities.

Authorities said it appeared that the dog, which was current on its rabies vaccination, was not provoked when it attacked the boy.

I find it hard to believe that a boxer that young could have savagely attacked a nine year old "angel".

Yea, that is very strange. I guess we will never know the actual situation, but just don't sound right. I have had parents yell at my dogs for barking at their "angels", who are innocently hanging out on the sidewalk, these kids where taunting my dogs,. Parents refuse to believe they threw BIG rocks over the 6 ft. fence at our (at the bridge) dogs every chance they got, which isn't often anymore cause I came out with a video camera a few times, and pretended to be taping, (but battery was dead).

My 16 yr old adopted son is black and last summer a neighbors 4 yr old little blonde angelic looking daughter would ride circles around him on her tricycle when the boys played basketball on the street, chanting, the "N" word over and over and over. How obnoxious is THAT image! I tried to talk to her mother and she SCREAMED at me and insisted her angel was not predjudice and would never ever say such a thing. I agreed she was probably just repeating something she heard somewhere else, but it had to stop. My son quit playing b- ball for almost a yr till they moved, it had quite an effect on him. Video cameras, the new denial buster!

My step-son is constantly messing with Tia and Sonny. When Sonny was just a baby, Wade was pretty concerned about his son so he trained Sonny pretty agressivley to be tolerant of kids. So when the son played with him, he could do whatever he wanted and Sonny wouldn't do anything except try and leave. Which is a good thing but Wade taught his son that it was ok to play with animals agressively. No matter how I try and explain to my stepson that no other dog is like Sonny, he doesnt listen. Last weekend I must have told him 10 times to quit messing with Tia (he is 10 and has a selective hearing problem) so she nailed him. Bit his hand, he cried and told on her, I gave her a bone for being as patient as she was and repeated to my stepson that he was told several times not to mess with her so he deserved to get bit. It probably sounds a little harsh but if you could witness how this boy "plays" you would understand more. Anyway, I know not one single boxer that is agressive enough to bite anyone for no reason. But if I ever witnessed what allegedly happened from the beginning to the end, I would have to do the same thing the family did. Although we love our furkids, we have to protect our skins kids too.

Lillybird, I am so sorry your son had to go through that. I can't believe a 4 yr old would know that kind of language if not learned from her parents. What kind of mom would allow that behavior from her child. Although I like to portray my kids as "angels" I know they arent perfect. If someone told me of behavior such as this, oh look out!! I hope that I have raised my kids better than that though.
Too bad you didnt get the little girl on video and showed her mom. Wonder what her facial expression and reaction would have been then... hmmm. I am sure it would have been worth getting on camera too...
