Our vet has been following that schedule for a while. Only core vaccines at 1, 4, 7, 10 years with lepto and PI yearly :) So far so good :)

Is this a new thing in the US?

Each vet is different, the manufacturer makes the distemper vaccine good for 3 years but some vets still give it annually. Unfortunately the vet I work for still vaccinates yearly, but I think mostly it is just to help ensure that people come in yearly for exams.

I think the most exciting thing about what this says is that they are not recommending vaccinating EVERY 3 years. It is saying you just shouldn't do it more frequently than that, and that possibly can go even longer.

I like that they were suggesting titers instead. Vet's don't like giving up on annual vaccination, because it is such a cash cow.

I just had titer test for rabies done on my boxer Gauge I am waiting for the results. He has stage 2 kidney failure and I am scared to put anything else into his body that may damage his kidney farther. The test cost 283. but worth it I believe.

That's interesting! The one thing that makes me wonder about titer testing for rabies is because rabies vaccines are required by law - at least where I am - would a titer test that showed immunity be accepted by the powers-that-be? Especially if your dog were bitten by a possibly rabid animal?

R.R.O 1990,regulation 567

This is the regulation we have here in Ontario if you look at section 8 1and2 I believe.
Gauge has kidney disease, the each rabies vaccine here in Ontario states must be given to a healthy animal. The rabies vaccine is mixed with an agent called gentamicin. If you look up gentamicin it can cause more kidney damage in a dog.

So all this will depend on how his titer test turns out. He has a clean bill of health otherwise beside the kidney, and pancreatitis issues.

According to the vet titers for rabies must be done once a year.
