My 7 year old, Adia, had a tumor removed from her hind leg about a year ago. It grew from a mosquito bite size to nearly a golf ball in about 2 weeks. I knew this was something to worry about, so I brought her to the vet. They did an aspirate and found odd cells. We decided to remove the mass and investigate further in the lab.
The tests came back with few mast cells, but the doc said it was not a mast cell tumor. It was a fibrosarcoma - which is a connective tissue cancerous tumor. OK... so I have done some research and it seems like that is what a mast cell tumor is. Am I wrong on this one? I'm really confused.
Since then, she's had 3 other tumors just under the skin (about the size of a grape or less) and the vet said to watch them carefully and if there was any change to go back. There has been no change until this last week. I noticed one of them has gotten very fluid-like and bulbus (sp?) I also found a new one just under her lower rib that is much bigger.
I am seeing a surgery specialist this Thursday and they will examine her to decide what we will do - and if there are any other tumors. Then we will go to the oncologist if that is the next step.
I am remaining pretty calm right now because I don't like to get myself worked up until I know something. We fear the unknown, right? Well, the only problem I'm having with this is I'm not finding enough information to explain the difference between all the canine tumors. Can anyone help on this one?
