Ok I need some new treat ideas for my girls! We have the Kong and we put peanut butter inside, but I think they are getting tired of that. I know rawhides are bad, so I dont give them those, but I am running low on chewing outlets. I know raw bones are good for them, but (this is a bit silly I know) I dont eat meat, and the idea of touching raw bones makes me sick!!! HAHA. So does anyone know any other bones or chewing ideas that I can give the girls?

Thanks

Have you tried bully sticks?? They are excellent for chewing, and totally digestible. You can also fill their kongs with things beside peanut butter. I use cheese, yogurt, frozen vegetables, applesauce, liver paste...pretty much ANYTHING you can think of. Put it in layers so they have different things to work for, and freeze the kong. More challenging that way.

Have you tried Nylabones? Lucky loves to chew on that. Or greenies? How about velvet bones? I believe those are made up of just cornstarch, and come in all different flavors.

I don't know if it will fit into a kong:p but I use carrots, they are cool so it helps soothe the gums and sometimes it takes them a while to figure them out:o

yep i agree with the carrots my pup loves them.

also apples, they help clean the teeth too. ;)

nylabones are really good as they're not dangerous & you can get different flavours. :)

Hi -

You can try stuffing the Kong with these:

Chunks of fruit like banana, pear, apple, melon (no seeds)
Some yogurt, either plain or vanilla, low or non fat

If you freeze the Kong after stuffing it with the above, it's sort of like a "pupsicle".

We have the "Galileo" bone (Nylabone makes it), it looks like the real deal, comes in two sizes and is made for strong chewers. Only downside is if it's dropped on an uncarpeted floor, it makes quite a loud thump.

The other type of "pupsicle" you can make is by taking low fat/low salt chicken broth (homemade or canned), fill an ice cube tray and freeze. If you want, put small bits of meat, veggies, whatever in the broth and give your dog 1-2 of these as another type of chew.

Hope this helps~

Riley is having problems with allergies...in trying to pinpoint the cause, I stopped giving her peanut butter (which she LOVES). I started filling her kong with cream cheese because it has a similar consistency and she loves it too! So, that may be another idea!

Veggie Rawhide

Hey I started a thread a while ago ( http://www.boxerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81976&highlight=Veggie+Rawhide ) about this great fabulous amazing treat called Sam's Yams. All it is is big pieces of dehydrated sweet potato. The thread has a link to their website, where you can buy online. Sascha LOVES them! They don't last as long as real rawhide, but a whole piece will keep Sascha occupied for a good 15 minutes. I just recently bought a bag of the "Big Boys" though. I haven't given her one yet, but I'm hoping that'll keep her busy longer :)

I was just about to start another thread about Sam's Yams. I got them for Lucy and the two times she ate them she had diarreha and threw up. Last night I tried to give her one and within 15 minutes she threw up twice. Has anyone had that problem? I'm not going to give them to her again.

We use Nylabones too, though Guinness goes in spurts where he doesn't care for them at all. Then suddenly, he decides he wants to chew them again. Weird!
The edible Nylabones can have bigger pieces break off (happened to us once, I discovered only after he puked up a large chunk!) so even though they are safer than a lot of treats, they could still potentially be a choking hazard. Nylabone has other varieties that are durable, even my friend's labrador can't break off a piece and he's quite a chewer - those might be better when leaving him unattended.
Try all sorts of stuff in the Kong, I have even used his kibble mixed with peanut butter so it's a bit healthier than just peanut butter. Mashed banana would be good also, mixed with the peanut butter (an Elvis Kong...? ). I'm going to try the cream cheese idea, I'll bet Guinness goes nuts for that!
