Completely Boxer Crazy
Hello all - back after an extended absence. We sadly lost Dempsey, our previous boxer last year. I decided that maybe boxers wouldn't be in my future any longer, since he was the third boxer I've lost over the years. Well...I got notified that there was a senior boxer at my local animal control that had been moved to the "Extremely Urgent" list. We all know what that means...
I went to look at him to see if he'd be a candidate for a boxer rescue that I'm associated with, and I knew that his age would be a problem - probably 6-8 years old. While his body's in great shape, his mouth and teeth are a complete mess! He's missing several teeth, and the ones he has are worn way down from chewing on hard surfaces - cage bars, bones, whatever. He also has a scar around his neck from a collar issue - maybe overuse of a prong collar? In addition, his ears have almost a pitt crop, making him look tougher than he is. His eyes are slightly cloudy too, giving away his age.
He's as sweet as can be, well mannered, and was a joy to interact with at the pound. Well, so much for my vow to not have anymore boxers - ! Jackson made his freedom ride home with me on August 29th! I couldn't just leave him there! He doesn't chase my little dogs (yay!), he is hearworm negative, he was already neutered (came to animal control that way), and he had already been wormed and vaccinated by animal control before I brought him home! At intake, he only weighed 48 lb., but at adoption, he was 61 lb. - and that was in only 2 weeks at animal control, so the boy likes to eat! I immediately took him to the vet b/c I noticed that he had some stress colitis (he pooed at animal control while I had him out), and he was put on two meds to help this, which it has. Otherwise, he appears in great health - heart is good (relief); no lumps/tumors (yay).
I may only have a few years with him, but they'll be happy years! Seniors rock!!
