Hello Everyone

I am a proud owner of Achilles, I just got him Saturday. I have question on house training is it alright to pick him up and bring him outside to pee after he wakes up? The reason why I ask is soon as he wakes up he goes right away and I can't call him in time to go out. He's good with pooping outside now its just the peeing issue, am I teaching him Bad manors by picking him up to go outside or should I call him?

Thanks All

At this point in time, I'd just carry him. What you're trying to teach him is to potty outside, and teaching that requires successful potty stops outside.

At this age, peeing after a nap is going to be an urgent need for him. The risk of him not making it as far as the door is very high (bear in mind that he has limited ability to hold on, and no earthly notion yet that he should) if he's going under his own steam. Thus, I'd just stick with carrying him first thing, and once he starts to get the idea and starts to develop better bladder control, then let him walk/run on his own.

Yup in our house at the moment Casper wakes up, he mooches around a bit then does the old circling & sniffing and we're all like 'Quick get him out' and we whisk him up and outside where he promptly pee's :) He'd never make it to the door if he had to walk, he has to manoeuvre through 2 other boxers on his way out ;)
As long as he eventually gets the message you do your business outside I don't think it matters how he gets there being so small & young.

I used to carry my dog out for his first walk every morning. Otherwise he would not make it to the door. Until he was too heavy so it was time then for him to be able to hold long enough until he got to his potty spot.

I have carried my guy outside since I got him home. I try to take him out the same door and even now he is still getting use to the staires and won't walk down the staires to the back door yet but he will stand at the top and fuss when he needs to go out.

I carried Lola (6 wks) for a week, and ran like hell with her. I did park her crate directly across from the back door so it's a straight shot and I do open the door before I open the crate and now she runs like hell and so far (fingers crossed) no accidents!!! I still pick her up in the morning and probably will for a bit.

When we got maximus, we lived on the 3rd floor of an apt. building. when he woke up in the morning, we'd RUSH him down the stairs carrying him and plop him on the grass. i must say, he did very well... no accidents on mommy! :) once he got big enough to where we knew he wouldn't fall through the outside stairs, he'd run down and potty on the grass all by himself. that took a few weeks though.

We also have an 8 week old baby that for some reason will poop outside but when it comes to peeing she will not signal that she has to go. Just as soon as she wakes up we carry her outside, but during the day there is no signal, rhyme/reason to when see goes. the only corrolation is that we have cats that have gone on the floor. Could that be causing her to pee where the cats have gone? Any suggestions would be helpful!!!
