We had the same problem with Quinsi when we brought him home. He cried and cried and cried the first 2 or 3 nights we had him. What I ended up having to do was carry him like a baby, rock him to sleep.. then quietly put him in the crate and go to bed myself. If he woke up in the middle of the night because he had gone potty, I would have to clean him and the crate up and do the rocking process all over again. Thankfully this only lasted for 2 or 3 days. I always made sure it was nice and padded on the bottom for him (usually with a blanket and a fluffy pad) and a couple of stuffed animals. When he was a baby (when we first brought him home) when I would lay him down in the crate, I always made sure he was laying on his bear (it's that Mommy Bear thing, the one for infants with the heartbeat sounds, although it doesn't work).. I figured as long as he felt some kind of fur that it might help his transition. To this day, he still sleeps with that bear in his crate.
I also moved where the crate was sitting. At first I had it sort of in the dining room, alone. When I moved it to the living room area he seemed to quiet down. I have a big 1960s Coca Cola clock that illuminates and acts as a nite light, I think he enjoyed that.. as well as having a bigger space to look at. All I know is that a few weeks later we moved the crate for my daughters birthday party and that night we put him in the crate, which was in the dining room as it was in the beginning, and he cried. I got up and moved it to the living room, he was fine for the rest of the night.
Then, the other night for no reason that I know of, he started howling after we went to bed. Full on howling and crying. After having him for 9 weeks and him not doing this since, it was weird. I got up and let him out thinking maybe he had to go potty. I pointed him to the puppy pad and he just looked at me.. trying to be cute. So I sat down on the couch and he jumped up and sat in my lap. He just wanted company I figured. I assumed his crate was getting too small for him and the next day, I bought him the bigger crate. He loves it... so that may have been it. He may have been trying to tell me that his crate was getting uncomfortable.
