New Puppy! and a question

Well after the disaster of finding out that our puppy to be Maggie Mae had passed, we found a new beautiful little Lady Venus. We brought her home last night and she's "awesome". She didn't wine or cry in the 1.5 hour ride home and she was great in her crate last night. No problems, I walked her at 6:45 and then she wanted nothing to do with her crate. So we played till I had to come to work. Two things:
1) She was in a pen with her brothers and mother and now she just does her "Doo Doo" etc. on the side walk. How can it get her onto the grass. I picked her up when she was ready to squat, but then she wouldn't go on the grass. Advice please!
2) Best way to get her and the cat not to fight. She trys to play with the cat, and the cat basically wants nothing to do with her. Obviously, they just met and need to learn their roles. Someone give a little advice please>

Our puppy has a similar problem. He doesn't like to walk on the grass, especially if it is wet. You would think it was killing him. So when we take him out, even just in our back yard, we put him on a leash and set him down in the grass. By holding his leash, he can't walk back to the patio and soon finds the grass a suitable place to go potty. Another advantage is we take him to the same spot every time, making it much easier to clean up after him. Good luck with training your puppy.

Might I suggest a fantastic book that gives good puppy & dog training advice:

"Good Owners, Great Dogs"
by Kilcommon

Not too expensive, & loads of good advice, stories & general dog knowledge.

If you can get some of his work in your area, Stanley Koren's work on the psycology of dogs is also great reading. The most recent being: "How to Speak Dog" . Dr. Koren is a human psychologist with a special interest in dogs & dog training. He is really good!

If you get Brian Kilcommon's book, you should also get Jean Donaldson's "The Culture Clash" (actually, you should get The Culture Clash regardless) - it too is full of loads of good information, and will give you a positive way to deal with the issues of puppyhood and beyond (Kilcommons is a correction-based trainer).

If she's not really familiar with the feeling of grass, that may be what's keeping her from pottying on it. Just keep working with her - maybe walk her on the grass for the whole walk, instead of moving her onto it just when she squats. Give her treats/praise frequently while she's on the grass, so she learns it's a Good Thing - and *lots* of praise while she's pottying on the grass and a jackpot (handful of treats) right after.

She and the cat should be able to work it out amongst themselves, with a little time. If not, I know there are several posts on the forums about this that you can do a search for.
