Boxer Pal
Hello all -

Hoping to capitalize on your collective Boxer knowledge. I have a 7 month old baby, Macy, who is absolutely a love. I got her from a reputable breeder (AKC) on a farm in Topeka back in July and she passed her vet checkup beautifully.

In the past two weeks, she's been diagnosed with the mange (she's on Ivermectin now) and yesterday they called with her x-ray results from last week. She's been limping off and on for a few weeks and on the initial vet visit, they determined she pulled a muscle and put her on Rimadyl. However, the x-rays show that the growth plate in her back leg is nonexistent as a result of either a break or an infection. The vet is pretty sure that it's an infection (from her symptoms) and wants to do a joint aspiration tomorrow to determine how bad it is. Then we can potentially treat it with antibiotics. He also wants to do a separate bone test for another biopsy to determine if the bone is infected. If it is, then she most likely has a bacteria that will eat away at all of her bones - and soon.

They are also recommending a very painful (and expensive) reconstructive surgery for her leg. Since the growth plate is gone, her tibia will no longer grow but her femur will. This could cause problems later with hip issues, etc., but even after the surgery, they can't guarantee that the bacteria won't return.

Like all of you, I ADORE my baby. I have waited several years to get her, she sleeps in bed with me and she is an absolute sweetheart. I love her to bits - she has more toys and gets more attention than most kids. I want her healthy and well, but can't see putting her through undue pain at such a young age. In plain English, I don't want to lose her and want to be aggressive here. Has anyone dealt with similiar issues? Any advice? Thank you -

I have never had this problem with either of mine but I wish you and Macy well and I hope they are able to find out what is wrong and help her get better. I'm very sorry she's sick. Perhaps you could contact her breeder and find out if any of the other dogs have any problems that maybe could clue you in as to what it could be. Good luck, I hope they can help her.

Boxer Booster
immune system

Sorry that you are having to deal with these types of issues! One important thing that is sometimes overlooked by the vet is boosting her immune system. When Reznor had demodectic mange, we focused on boosting his overall health and immune system and he got better. I still have the bottle if Ivermectin because I never gave it to him. There is a lot of info on boosting the immune system on this site. It is really important especially because of all of the physical and emotional stress that she (and you) are going thru while just trying to get well.
Best wishes!

im so sorry to hear about your girl. :( i have no good advice for you, but we are sending you ((((((HEALING VIBES))))) in hopes that your girl feels better. Remember.. just because a breeder as AKC registered dogs, does not make them reputable. Boxers are prone to many genetic diseases and the proper health tests should be done before dogs are bred. (Heart, Hips, Eyes, and Thyroid checks.. not done by normal vets.. ) If this breeder is truly reputable, they should definately know about your girl, and be offering you help/solutions/support. Good luck, please keep us posted about her condition..

First off the mange is treatable but I would like to know if your breeder was truly reputable? I would ask them about her heath problems?? Secondly I would get a second opinion about her bone problems just for your own satisfaction and knowledge. Take each day as it comes and if the prognosis is good I would invest what is necessary.

Keep loving her and I would find out everything I could about what she has and how to treat it..

I'm so sorry to hear about all the problems. I live it Topeka too. I would be happy to help you do some research or help in anyway I can. I would talk to the breeder and see what all they test for (probably not all what they should) from the sounds of it. See what they say. My boxer had lots of health issues before he died, I know how hard it is. I could recommend a great vet that specializes in orthopedics. My lab mix has a plate and 10 screws in her leg and is back to normal. I know there is more to your situation. He is one of the best in Topeka. You and Macy are in my thought and prayers.

[QUOTE She's been limping off and on for a few weeks and on the initial vet visit, they determined she pulled a muscle and put her on Rimadyl.

Another issue (not to add to your worries) could be the Rimadyl. It can cause very upset stomach. I had to give my lab mix a Pepcid twice a day to help her stomach.
Keep us posted......
