New Member In Spain

Hi
I am a new member living in Spain. We have just got our first ever Boxer puppy. We got him as a friend for our Victorian Bulldog - Babe. Our new boxers name is Benson, and he is quite a character. Anyone got any advice for training boxers , as he is quite a handfull, and different from any other puppy we have had.

HI and welcome, I am new to this website also. I found the Trainning Forum really helpful, you are in for such a treat, boxer puppys are unique in so many ways they are so wonderful! early training is my tip and if possible puppy classes.

They can be a handful, since they are normally quite stubborn. While they love to be around us, they can become quite independent when it comes to following commands.

Go to the forums that deal with puppies, or training, and you'll find a ton of helpful information.

They key to training is found in two things, consistency on your part, and motivation.

Consistency from you so that Benson doesn't become confused, and what really grabs his interest, whether it be a toy, food, or praise.

Be sure to use the same terms for commands. For example, don't say sit one time, and sit down the next, as though adding the extra word works the same way it might for a human. Sit is one command, while down is another which means for the dog to lie down.

The treat, toy or whatever, is used to get the dog's attention, and to reward him for correctly responding to a command.

Patience and persistance will be your best allies. Don't expect wonders, though they will come with time. As others have suggested, obedience classes are great, but remember, they are primarily to teach you how to train your dog. Granted, he will learn some things there, but most of his learning will take place with you.

Good luck, once you get in the swing, it will be great fun for both of you. Just remember, keep the sessions short, ten to fifteen minutes while he is a small puppy. They don't have long attention spans. When he becomes disinterested, you will be fighting a losing battle for the two of you.

If you find yourself getting frustrated, then stop the session. You'll do much better when you are relaxed and having fun. So will Benson.

The puppy phase on a boxer lasts a LONG time, but a trained puppy is a great puppy!! Congratulations on your boxer baby, there is a lot of help on the puppy forums for training, feeding, etc.
