PrinceOscar

Boxer Pal
Hello everyone. Well, I am writing today with so much excitement of being a new boxer owner. I have had dogs all my life but not a boxer. My husband and I had saved our older dog, Nala, from a humane society and she is part boxer. From her, I was really interested in the boxer breed and wanted to learn more. The more research I did on them the more I wanted a full boxer. Well, I was surprised with a boxer puppy (8 weeks old) for my b-day. I have had so much fun with Oscar. It has been a complete joy watching him grow - today he is 5 months old and if I could, I would get another one already!!! :) He is such a little ham and his face expressions are to die for! He just can not show enough affection for us and loves to snuggle with us and Nala!!

Recently, Oscar was diagnosed with demodectic mange and was given ivermectin to help it. He did not have a bad case of it just a spot on top of his head. Well...the mites are gone but my puppy is left with a bad reaction to the ivermectin. I don't know if it was an overdose he was prescribed or if it really is just a bad reaction. It is effecting his nervous system and it is extremely hard for him to walk now. Of course, he has been back and forth to the vet and I am taking him for a second opinion tomorrow. I am very nervous that there will be long term effects or that he might be paralyzed. The vet said that it could take up to 3-4 weeks for the medicine to be completely out of his system. I guess I am asking if anyone's boxer has ever had a reaction to ivermectin?! Please let me know if you know anything about this. The vet said that there really is nothing to speed up the process but time. We have seen little improvement over the past few days but I am still NOT convinced that this is all we can do is just sit around and wait.
I have to think that there has to be something to get my little puppy back to his spunky self faster!

Thank you for listening and any help you can offer.

Welcome to Boxerworld. I don't know anything about mange, but I'm sure there are lot of others that do. You can also do a search to find other posts regarding it. Good luck, hope he recovers quickly.

Greetings from the southern part of the state (Evansville). We also own our first boxer after reading up on the breed and realizing that was the dog for us - our Sady is now 12 weeks old. Good luck with the medication!
