I am from Tampa, Florida. After much consideration, my family and I think we might like to get a boxer. I have owned rottweilers in the past and had a bad experience with a new pup a few months ago. I need a little help on deciding if indeed, the boxer is for us and where to find a good breeder in my area. I would consider a rescue, but with no boxer experience, I don't know if that would be the best choice ( they might have problems that are not true to the breed, and limited knowledge might be a factor). Please advise on breeders/thoughts on rescues that are available on board currently.

Hello and welcome to the Boxerworld! :)

To know it for sure if the boxer is a dog for you, it's necessary to know what kind of family you are. Do you live active lives? - Boxer are very playful, need much exercise and long walks. Do you like your dog to be a member of your family, are you ready to pay much attention to your dog? - Boxers need much contact with their human families and they often follow their owners wherever they go. A few member of this board who own both boxer and rotties say that boxers have more bonds to "their" humans than rotties.
Boxers are also prone to some diseases like heart diseases, cancer, hip displasia, allergies.

You do a great work by trying to investigate about boxers before getting one. I hope you fall in love with this breed as you know more and more about it and you finally find a good breeder or rescue a boxer needing the second chance.

Good luck! :)

selecting a breeder

I am a breeder myself. I would suggest if you go through a breeder, ask to see the sire and dame. Those 2 dogs can tell you a lot about how your puppy will be. I also recommend getting a certificate of health or a health contract. Most breeders should feel comfortable with this. Every person that purchases a pup from me gets a guarantee of health. I strongly recommend screening the breeder. Some people unfortunately are just in it for money. They would sell a pup reguardless of health just to make a buck. I think however, that your instincts will lead you in the right direction. Good luck finding your new family member.
