New Here With Skin Question

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum but have been looking for a place such as this. Our 2 year old fawn boxer (Sydney) has HORRIBLE skin issues. Red, itchy and she will scratch herself until she bleeds if we don't stop her. Typically we distract her to take her mind of it. Our vet has us giving her 4 benedryl a day, but I swear there has to be something better than that. She, along with her brother and sister, are indoor dogs, they go out when it is nice and play but typically they are in the house and have the run of the roost.

Sydney has already had one tumor removed from her front right leg and the vet said that it probably started out as an 'itchy place' and that boxers were predispositioned to those type of skin issues.

Any suggestions??? Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Sounds like allergies to me

Could be environmental, but with boxers it's very often food that is the cause. What do you currently feed her? Switching to something with minimal grains (actually, raw is often best) can often help.

I would tend to find the source of these problems, as opposed to using Benadryl (although you may not have any other option, ultimately)

I agree with Boxer, it seems like allergies, and there are 2 kinds: environmental or food-related.

I would start by taking a good hard look at what you are feeding her. What type/brand of kibble is it? Boxers can be notoriously sensitive to certain grains or protein sources in their food.

I would suggest doing a search here on quality kibbles and you will find a TON of great information. Good luck

You need to get to the source of the itching, has your vet taken skin scraping to look for mange or any other skin problems, once you have eliminated those causes it could be allergies which boxers are prone to, what are you feeding her ?

Currently we feed her Purina One Lamb & Rice Formula. We have been through the mange treatements when she was less than a year old and she get skin scrapes everytime we go to the vet it seems. She has been mange free for a little over a year. I have giving her benedryl. I will look for information on kibble.
