Boxer Pal
We've just introduced a 9wk old male boxer (Bronson) into the house, as a companion to our 1yr old female boxer (Ali).

One week in and we've been watching them like hawks, keeping eyes out for signs of aggression. They licked each others faces when they first met, and seem to be getting along really well. Ali sits outside his crate when he's asleep, watching him, sometimes whining softly ("wake up, come play!!")

Don't know if it's too soon to tell, but we suspect that Bronson will be dominant. He nips at her legs and jowls, and is quite vocal (in comparison to her). Even tried humping her the other night, which she wasnt too keen on!

She's quite gentle with him, by in large: pushes him off, gives him gentle nips when he's going for her, doesn't get that vocal. She lets him sleep beside her and he even nibbles at her inside legs (like he's trying to feed).

Couple of questions I wonder if you folk can offer advice on:
- should we keep their toys separate. They seem quite happy playing together...but can get a little loud at times and often get into tug of war. We never played tug of war with Ali, as heard it provokes agression. Should we discourage the dogs from doing so?

- what signs should we look for that might tell us things are getting out of hand (aggression wise)?

Many thanks, happy New Year!

The rule of thumb we got for agression was if there were teeth involved, it was TOOO much. Growling/barking is ok, but snapping is not. I think as a baby though, your older dog will probably put up with a lot!!

Sounds like perfectly normal interaction between a baby pup and an older dog to me :) It is absolutely normal for her to be allowing him to get away with near-murder - that is how a well mannered dog behaves with a baby ;)

As he gets older, she will gradually start to let him away with less and less outrageous behaviour. LOL - just like human babies, the adults don't expect them to know about social graces from the outset. Manners and subtle behaviours are something that are learned over time.

Boxer do tend to get loud in play, yes. Bet 90% of the noise is coming from Bronson too. That's another 'baby's privilege' :) It is only a problem if the noise bothers you. Nothing to stop you telling them to quiet down a bit, if that's the case, or if you think they're getting too carried away. IMO there's nothing wrong with letting them play tug. Or with you playing either, for that matter, providing you control the game.

It sounds to me as though you have two perfectly normal puppies. Can't see anything for you to worry about in your post :) Enjoy them - this stage doesn't last forever. I wouldn't bet too much money on him being the dominant of the two though. LOL - usually it is the females who 'rule the roost' and as said, right now he's getting all the leeway due to a baby pup. That will change ;)
