Hi, I am looking into getting a new camera. I have narrowed it down to 2. The Nikon D40X and the Canon EOS 40D.

Does anyone own either one of these? I would appreciate any advice.

TIA

Go with the canon 40 d I met a guy who uses cameras for a living, and he uses the 40 d and a rebel 8 MP his back up. You have Ton of lens to chose from.

I have the canon rebel 8 MP. I got it because the body was very inexpensive, and was able to get used lens for 1/2 the price of new. We use adobe light room to develop and adjust to brightness and highlights of the pictures.

You will love the pictures.

Of the two, I'd take the 40D also. But they're not exactly comparable cameras - either in specification or in price ;) The D40X is just over half the price of the 40D for a reason LOL.

See that's why the Nikon D40X was my choice. I think the Canon 40D may have too many bells & whistles for me. My DH prefers Canon over Nikon. Decisions, decisions.

You can't really decide on which one to choose just because, there has been the great Canon Nikon debate going on forever now. Your best bet would be to someplace that sells both and hold them in your hand. Whichever one feels the best in your hand, get it. It is sort of like buying a pair of shoes, comfort is very important. I am typing this in a hotel room after holding my Canon XTi in my hand for the last 7 hours, shooting over 800 pictures at a wedding. Do your reasearch and hold the actual cameras, you will come to a conclusion.

I am off to bed, dead on my feet tonight...

totally agree. I like my Canon rebel xt 8mp. I got the camera body for $250.(new) and then got a tamron 28-200 for $100 (used). try out the cameras @ one of those big electronics stores like best buy ECT... then look on line for the best price.

ps We have take over 10,000 pictures with it so far.

In that case, perhaps comparing between the D40X and the Canon 400D (aka Rebel xTi or KISS digital) might be a better idea. They're more comparable cameras in both specification and price - even if not identical (each has one or two features the other doesn't). The 40D is one step up (in size, price and specs) from those two.

The reason we had narrowed it down to those 2 was that my DH is a superb photographer, he has only ever used SLR cameras and I am more of a point & shoot person  So, when looking at digital SLRs I picked the one that would most suit me (the Nikon) and he chose the one he would love (Canon). We can only buy 1 digital SLR so we are trying to pick one that would suit us both.

The camera shop also suggested the Rebel xTi but did not have one for us to try, he will have one in next week - so our hunt continues...

Thanks again for all of your replies.
