New bi-law passed in our town!!

A new bi-law has been passed in our small town (pop. - 47,000), stating that residents are now only allowed 3 dogs per household!! There are alot of ticked-off dog lovers here. This bi-law has been passed as a result of a 1-time incident involving a pitbull attack (the owner of the pit had several pits in his home and they were found to be in a neglected state). This of course gave the city-council something to stew about and the decision was made to limit the amount of dogs per home to 3!! I do not believe that this bi-law in anyway curbs irresponsible pet-owners!
My mother (member of BW), has 3 dogs, 2 boxer beauties and 1 lab/pointer mix. She has a huge yard with a huge open field right next-door, and has entertained the idea of a new boxer puppy (or rescue) for quite sometime, and now she will not be allowed:( , The maddening thing about all of this is that she, and many other dog lovers in this town, who are good, loving, responsible pet-owners are now limited because of irresponsible jerks who breed and own dogs, not out of love, but for an image of "toughness" or "intimidation":mad: What is this world coming to?:rolleyes:

I can't have more than 3 dogs per my home owner association. You have to prove you are a breeder and dogs CAN NOT be kept in the backyard full time, even though we have 6 foot high brick walls. I don't keep my dog outside so that doesn't affect me. Personally I like the rule.

In my case of course, I knew the rule before we bought the house. We also can only have 1 car in the driveway overnight and no cars in the street.

Not sure where you are in Canada, but we have the same law here in Ottawa Ontario too. One household is only allowed to have three dogs at a time. This is OK for me because I have two and that's enough for me right now!

I have to say that I agree with the law (because it doesn't affect me right now!!), it helps to reduce the number of neglected and/or abused dogs. I think it reduces the potential of this happening if you limit the number of dogs on household can have. Not saying that people with more than three dogs will neglect them.

The ironic thing is that the city will allow you to own three dogs, but only allows you to walk two at a time! So you have to leave one at home while you walk the other two - how awful is that?!!

I feel sorry for the dog walkers that are trying to make a living. It would be much better to walk more dogs a time. BUt I guess it's done for the safty of the other people and animals... I know I have a hard enough time cotrolling my two if they want to pull me after a bouncing ball or something.

I hear ya! I have two dogs and that is enough for me, however, the district council where I live will only allow two dogs to be owned by one household at any one time. To have more than two you have to get special dispensation from them and being the bunch of prats that they are .....

There is a lot of wringing of hands etc here in NZ at the moment due to some vicious dog attacks recently. Of course, the dogs are destroyed, whereas it really should be the irresponsible owners that are destroyed IMO. In one case a child stuck her nose through the fence and provoked the dog and the Jack Russell bit her nose - the JR was put down. It has even gotten to the stage where the politicians are getting involved and they are going to look at tougher dog laws. This would be fine, except where I live they don't even have dog-only specific areas! Dogs are allowed in certain areas, but then so are unsupervised, unattended kids - a disaster waiting to happen.

I just wanted to say that I too agree that bi-laws such as this will help with reducing the amount of abused/neglected dogs...it's just unfortunate that REAL owners must suffer the consequences of the irresponsible ones!
I would also like to point out that there are no such laws here for cats...and believe me...we have more of them than we do squirrels!! Unfortunately...the shelter here has no room for stray cats anymore...they are overrun! And a stray cat can be dangerous...my mother was scratched by one that was sheltering in our garage, and 15 yrs later she had a lump under her arm where she was scratched by this cat. Turns out it was something called "cat-scratch-fever" (really), and had to be removed surgically or it could've become very serious....even fatal the doctor said because the disease could have travelled to the brain over time!!:eek:
I just get so upset and mad when I see the results of irresposible pet-ownership! Why can't we just put these people someplace...say..DOG @#&! ISLAND...and have them "scoop" all day!!:D

Hmmm, pretty similar here too - we're allowed three, but any more than that has to be approved by the city council (with a small fee, of course). On the up-side, I guess this helps to at least restrict the BYB scenario - en-mass at any rate.

Worse than that, it turns out that the neighbourhood kids were in the habit of teasing the dog, pretty much on a daily basis - so whose fault is it really??? Law says the owner's.

I think they should put the same restrictions on cats as they do dogs :( I have more cats going to the restroom in my front yard and I don't even allow my own dogs to use the restroom out front.

Limiting the number of pets is probably a good idea.

We have the same law here. I acutally wouldn't own more than 2 dogs, but that's all I have room for. We have seen on the news here, way more than once, about homes here in Omaha having up to 100 animals. Most of these animals have been cats, but there have been a number of dogs as well. They are all neglected of course. These people aren't animal lovers, they are just plain crazy. They live in these tiny little houses, with no yard, so where are these animals staying? All inside, can you imagine! Almost half of the animals have to be put down due to poor health. This just makes me sick! It just goes to show how well the law works here. Of course these people get all of the animals taken away from them, but who's to say they dont' start all over again! These kind of people ruin it for others that would love to have more than 3 dogs, and have the room and are more than willing to take good care of them. It's just sad!

Our bi-laws are for total number of pets. The thing with strays in the Phoenix area is cats and stray dogs make a nice snack for the coyote(s) and occasional mountain lions. A co-worker had left her cat outside for abotu 15 mintues one day, came back and found the hind legs and tail in the yard. Coyote got it.

We have also seen a few mountain lions in the extreme North Scottsdale area. Boxers or any dog for that matter are no match for one of those suckers.

Ok now no one is going to want to come here!! I've never seen a coyote or mountain lion--have you?? Do you live on the outskirts of the city? I live in Chandler....but am moving to Maricopa in a couple of months... (woops--is that a threadjack?? )
