Completely Boxer Crazy
We had a couple of relapses with both dogs. We just went back to square 1 and did a quick retraining. Now they have us trained--we run to the door for a variety of reasons: Bunnies in the yard, I'm hungry, I want to lay outside etc, etc.

HE DID IT!!! Every single time I take him outside I use his paw to hit the bell. Lately I've been trying to get him to do it on his own and he'll very lightly hit it with his nose so I congratulate him and use his paw to hit it harder. Well yesterday I was on the phone and watchign him eat. He slowly walked to the door and sniffed, so I knew he had to go outside but I wanted to see what he did. So he walked to the bell, turned and looked at me and nudged it with his nose. I was SO happy that I congratulated him over and over. I took him outside and he did both #1 and #2. He got plenty of hugs and a couple treats when I took him back in. It took a couple days but now I KNOW he is starting to get the hang of it!

Good job. They ARE very quick learners. Now just wait till he learns that hitting the bell not only means he gets to potty, but also, outside in general, lol. I know Luka hits it a good 3-4 times after coming back in after doing both, then going out, then coming back in, then going out.......well, you get the picture, lol. I'm so ready to get that fence put up!!!

Congrats!!

Well I thought the first time may have been a fluke but he did it again yesterday. He was at the door whining and I tried to get him to ring the bell. He wouldn't, so I told him I am not going to let him out until he hits the bell. So I walked away and the next thing I heard was the bell rattling. I was so excited.

HOWEVER, I then took him over to my fiance's house and she has a golden retriever who LOVES Rocky. So they played non stop all night and he peed twice and pooped once in the hosue. That was a bit discouraging.

Well how long has it been... just a week or so? You guys are right, boxers are very smart. Rocky already has the bell training down pat. <<Knock on Wood>> He rings it every time he needs to go out... many times even if he just wants to play. I LOVE it because I don't have to worry about him all the time. Of course I still keep a close eye on him (he's just 3 months old) but he is doing very well with ringing the bell so it takes a load off my shoulders. The only time he has problems now is if he is playing inside with my fiance's dog and gets so excited he forgets to let me know or if he just woke up and I hadn't had the time to grab him yet.

To anyone having trouble with potty training... definately do bell training. It works GREAT!

Well it seems i am not having such of a good time at Bell Training we have tried everything she seems to think its just a game and don't bother with it at all. i take her to it hit it and then take her paw and say Pee Pee and take her out we do this 20 mins after each meal and a few extras during the day. my il girl just hit 16 weeks today and still has a ton of accidents. i have tried allowing her to run with my older dog whichis 7 thinking she'd follow him. but she goes out for an hr plays and come right in and pees on my kitchen floor. i don't now what else to do. she does good 30% of the time and the rest is all accidents. i just got her a crate and the first 3 days she did good she was in it from 8 am till 3:30 pm but on the 4th day she had an accident in it.we don't have anyone close that could come half way through the day so she is in it longer than i'd want. any ideas on hw to get her to go out if she don't want to do the bell training.

Looking for some more advice here....

Macie will ring the bell, but only if I take her to it, and she knows exactly what we expect when she does. We have been VERY faithful making sure she rings the bell each and every time we take her out to potty. When she rings, goes potty right away and then comes back in she gets a treat. When she rings, goes out and does NOT potty the she does not get a treat.

Are we doing this correctly? She rang the bell for the first time all on her own this afternoon - keeping my fingers crossed that it is consistent!!

When we where bell training Chase,at first he didn't ring it.We consistently would tak ehim to the bell, take his paw, ring it,praise him and say outside, then take him out.At first he would go to the door and just look at the door and whine. When he did this we would say ring the bell and you can go out,and we would point to the bell. One,day i hard work and perseverance paid off.Now he goes to the door, and rings the crap outta the bell.If you don't come fast enuff,he just starts ringing it endlessly..Try this method and see if you have success with it as we did..

We are doing exactly what you suggested... she will ring the bell all on her own if we take her to the door and tell her to ring it (at first we had to help her ring it). I am wondering if maybe we should start treating her when she rings the bell instead, as well as if she goes potty?

Bell training x Small children

I was suggested on the bell training on another post on this forum, but my concern is that I have 2 small kids that would be ringing that bell 24/7.. would that be a problem on the dog's learning??

I'm really new to dog trainning so I don't have any clue what would be the result of bell + dog + kids ... :S

My boxer btw is 1yr old.. is that too late?

Update!!

Macie has been accident free in the house for three days now!! She is also ringing the bell like a champ. Sometimes a little too often, but she knows that if she at least tries to go potty she gets a treat. :)
