Java Was 9wks old when I got him this January and was diagonsed with a heart murmur right from the start so I waighted to get him neutured hoping he would out grow it. When he didn't out grow it he was taken for an ultra sound & ekg and determined ok to be neutured. So he went in for neuturing on friday june 22nd. When I picked him up he seemed happy and pretty much pain free so I allowed him to jump up onto the backseat of my minny van (bad Mommy). He winced visably but showed no other signs of pain. Everything seemed to be going fine until Tuesday June 26th when he developed a large blood filled pocket in his sacs. I took him into my Vet and he was seen by a vet tech who told me it was caused by a blood clot and would resolve on it's own. So I took him home. By that night he was in a great deal of pain and was running a low grade temp (102.9). The pocket had visably gotten bigger as well. I called the Vet's emergency number and we decided (the vet and I) that he could wait until morning to be seen. When I got up at 6am to go to work his temp had dropped (101.9) so I assumed he would be fine. When I got home at 9am (just three hours later) and let him out of his kennel the swelling was even bigger and was now bleeding. This time I took him in to the vet on an emergency visit. The vet examined him and put him on oral Amoxacillin and Panlog cream & told me to do warm compresses three times a day. Within the next 24 hrs the swelling went down dramatically & he Started draining puss out of his sacs. My vet did not say specifically that he had an infection so am i right in assuming he did indeed have one, and could it be related to allowing him to jump into my van so soon after surgery?

thanks

Hi Kristin

You aren't a bad mommy!!! I don't know what this could be from but at least you were on top of the situation and Java is on the road to recovery ! Hope everything continues to improve !

It doesn't sound as if this would have been caused from jumping into the minivan however they are not supposed to jump on anything for about 7 days. But I must say it takes one heck of a person to be able to keep a boxer down for 7 days. I myself have a very hard time with this feat!! It does sound as if there is an infection going on :( Poor Java...I too am glad to hear that he is on the road to recovery and unfortunantly these things do happen but know that getting him neutered is more beneficial in the long run. Hugs to you and Java. Keep us updated on his recovery.

I thought I was being such a bad mommy letting him jump up in the van like that. I'm a puppy raiser for NEADS (National Education for Assistance Dog Services). Java is my sixth dog, but the first Boxer I've raised for them. The others were Labs & a Golden. None of the other dogs were that perky coming out of the vet's office after surgery.

You are definitely not a bad mommy! It just sounds like it got infected and jumping up on the seat would have had nothing to do with it. :)

I hope the puppy is feeling better soon. :)
