My 6 month old female boxer has been neutered. She managed to lick the area around the stitches and is really sore. I brought her to the vets and she has a hood now and cream for the area. The problem is she wont lie down to sleep and yelps when she does. Is there anything I could do for her while this heals.
The poor thing is falling asleep standing up.

I would contact the vet a.s.a.p. She shouldnt be that uncomfortable. My girl was spayed at a year and she was like a zombie for a couple of days but she slept comfortably all the time.

Ring the vet out of hours if you can, just to be on the safe side

Where in Ireland are you??

*Just an FYI if you have a female it's a spay, a male is a neuter*

If she's that uncomfortable I would call your vet and see about some pain medication to help with her discomfort for a couple of days. Definitely make sure to leave the e-collar on so she doesn't continue to lick that area raw, but in the mean time give them a call and they should be able to help you out with some pain medication or advice on what to do.

Good luck!

I would try another vet. Second opinion or some meds might be needed. She shouldnt be in that much pain. I changed from a poor vet recently- all about charging you extra- not great on the care and attention.

Im in Munster too, Limerick to be exact. Great to have someone near home on the forum!

Actually the term "neuter" can simply refer to the removal of an animals reproductive organs, whether male or female. I've noticed that many people outside the US say "neuter" for both males and females so maybe it's a language thing  but I know that it's not incorrect to say neuter for both sexes.

To the OP, hope your girl feels better soon. Maybe the incision is just very irritated from her licking it?? Keep us posted.
