I am considering the possibility of neutering one of my boxers, possibly both. The one I am considering (Yoda) is still young, 4.5 months. He is excellent around people, both young and old, but around other dogs he has never met before, he usually get's extremely aggressive. I've read that neutering often times helps to prevent such occurences. And although I am not going to breed Yoda, it has been suggested by my vet that I neuter Yoda because he supposedly has a very mild heart murmur; I say supposedly because one vet detected it very early on then said it went away, and another vet is still able to detect it. Anyhow, any comments regarding the outcome, both positive and negative, of putting their dog(s) through the procedure would be much appreciated.

Virtually everyone on this web site promotes spaying and neutering Boxers, unless they are of show potential.

There are many many threads on the benefit of neutering, both behavioral and physical. You can do a search (search button is in the upper right hand corner) and type in "neutering".

In my opinion you should get him neuterer whether he's aggressive or not if you're not fit to breed him properly. Heart murmurs are very prominent in boxers and b/c of this it makes anesthesia tricky. The most common to use is Acepromazine but you should NOT let your vet use this on your dog EVEN if he/she says "oh it's ok". Don't believe them. Too much info to post on it but the search will show you lots! I'm not sure about if the neutering will help his aggressiveness enough to make a difference.....there are stories both ways. See what the moderators say about that one. Socialize him like CRAZY!!!! At 4.5 months with enough socializing with other dogs that he doesn't know (dog parks are awesome!) he'll learn how to behave. One day he may get aggressive on a bigger/older dog and your pup will get put in his place. That's how it goes. They sort of teach the young Heart murmurs can come and go so he should be monitored each vet visit for changes in rhythms. This will be imperitive (and more important the whatever effect neutering will have) in his training and behavior as he grows. Neuter for sure but research all aspects first, like with any surgery, and find a vet you trust. Good luck in your search!!! Keep us updated!
