Hi there and Happy New Year to you all. We just got our Boxer mix puppy about a month ago. We don't know much about dogs, but I am learning alot here at BW. My question is-- I am planning on getting him neutered, mostly because he is a mixed breed and we live in a nice little neighborhood where there are alot of other dogs, and we don't want any upset neighbors:) Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could tell me at what age I should do this? He is 9 weeks old now, so I know it will be awhile, I can ask the vet, but we don't go back for like three weeks, so any advice would be appriciated. Thanks, Misty & Cooper

Some people and vets neuter very early. As early as 10-12 weeks.

Just my preference is to recomend waiting until the pup is five months to nine months. That way they do mature and get that "male" look but are neutered before they begin acting like a boy.

Thank You!!! I am so happy someone replied. That is helpful. I surely don't want to neuter him too early. I was wondering if even a year old was OK, or if he would already have those bad "boy" habits. Thanks Again, Misty

It can be done very young now if you and your vet agree that's the best choice. About 6 months is most common. I personally would not wait a year.

Misty,

I just found out some information about a drug that is used by a lot of vets that is VERY dangerous to boxers. It is called "Ace" or Acepromazine. I found out about it from reading some of the forums at Boxerworld and I'm glad I did. My 8 month old baby boy, Giguere, is being neutered on the 19th. I just called the vet to see if they use this drug and they do. I am soooo thankful to this website for the information it gives us. I asked them if they could use something else and they said they would. What if I hadn't known and he had died? I don't even want to think about it. Anyway, keep this in mind when you have your baby done.

Wow!!! That is good to know, I will have to check into that. This is the best website. My baby is just a mixed breed (boxer/rottie) but I have been addicted to this site. Thank you so much for all your help. Misty

I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that even if your baby is a mix,
he's still one of the family as long as he has some boxer in him. It is a wonderful website. I've only known about it less than a week and I'm hooked. I've learned a lot already!

You can see Cooper in my gallery. I really really wanted him to look like a boxer, and for awhile, he really looked like a mutt, a beautiful mut, but still, a mutt. But I do think he looks more and more like a boxer all the time. Check out my gallery photo's, and meet Cooper. Thanks, Misty

My Boxer is a female but my male Boston was done at 7mos. This was decided in Co operation with our vet. Well whenever he goes in Good luck Cooper on your surgery!
