Hello, I have a 4 month old pup, soon to be 5 months. I want to get him neutered but both of his testicals have not dropped yet and the process of neutering him is very pricey. Should I wait till 6 months and see if they come around? Is it a bad thing to wait on this or should I get it done right away?

It's unlikely that they'll drop beyond about this age - but, I guess, still technically possible if his inguinal canal were to close later than normal.

Retained testicles carry with them two risks - one is a high chance of turning cancerous, the other is the possibility that they might wrap around internal organs. The former is a relatively high risk, but it's very unlikely that it would happen at a young age (it's more of a consideration for those who're wishing to keep the dog intact), and the latter is perhaps something more likely to afflict a young dog, but still overall a low risk in the near future. In short, I don't think there's any pressing need to rush ahead to have him neutered immediately. Waiting a couple of months, just in case, seems quite reasonable to me.

Rolen had an undescended testicle...one had dropped, but the other one hadn't. The vet wanted to wait a few months to see if it would drop, but it never did. He was neutered when he was about 7 months old. It was a more involved surgery and it did cost more than a typical neuter. We felt like it was worth the cost because of the health issues that could develop later on.
