When getting a dog neutered, does the "boys" have to come off? Can a procedure like a vasectomy be done on dogs? What are the advantages/disadvantages?

During the neutering procedure they do take the testicles.
I have heard of some vets who perform vasectomies.
The truth is the dogs don't miss them one little bit. It's really not a big deal. The only advantage I could think of for keeping them is the dog looks like he hasn't been altered (if you would like to call that an advantage).
Disadvantages....Increased risk of cancer, hormones are still being produced so marking, territorial behaviors and roaming are still a risk.
It's a personal decision, your dog won't care either way ;) .

Harley03 pretty well said it all.

I would recomend you go with a standard neutering. If the testicles remain, you will have a dog full of hormones and still wanting to do everything the un-neutered boys do.

Everyone one will be happier with a standard neuter.

What they say is true. Leaving the testicles (and hormones) also increases the risk of your boy getting out of the yard to chase down that lovely bitch in heat. I'd whack 'em. (sorry - just had to say that. LOL!)
