Hi, I have read over a lot of sites that say that you should never use the drug Acepromazine on boxers because it causes a lot of problems for them and can possibly kill them... we are planning to schedule an appointment to neuter my puppy the first week of september when he goes to get his 16 week shots. I want to make sure that my Vet knows that he can not use this drug on my dog, however I was wondering what drug is safe for boxers? I want to have some knowledge on the topic just incase the vet doesn't know what he's talking about!! I don't want to look stupid saying I know you can't use this drug, but not know what is safe, any advice would help! thanks!!

Valium, for one. It is a perfectly safe alternative to Acempromazine. But your vet should know that.

Ace is not an anasthetic. It is a sedative. In fact, it is probably the most commonly used sedative in veterinary medicine (well, except amongst those vets who refuse to use it). The important thing about that is that anytime your dog is prescribed a sedative, it is likely to be Ace. That includes post-operatively. So you *have* to check.

Anyway, when it comes to surgeries, a sedative is commonly used pre-anasthetic. Not all dogs actually need it. But if a sedative is required, Acepromazine must not be given to boxers. Valium is a perfectly good alternative though, so *if* your dog needs to be sedated, make sure the vet is using something like valium and never Ace.
