Neighbor thinks Mugsy is a Pitt bull

The only thing you can really do is invite the neighbor over and explain to her that you weren't being nosey but you couldn't help but over hear her conversation with her neighbor about Mugsy being a pitbull. (Polite way of calling her a loud mouth) Introduce her to Mugsy and tell her Mugsy is a Boxer. If she still insists that Mugsy is a Pit, show her this web page 'Find the Pitbull' She if she is as smart as she thiks she is about dog breeds. Hopefully you can educate the ingorant.

So far we have been lucky and none of the neighbors have confused Gunner or Quinsi as beeing anything other than Boxers.

When we first moved here almost 20 years ago we had the same problem we had 2 mastiffs 165 & 210 these people thought they were pitbulls if you can believe that they were also champion show dogs people would walk on the other side of the road and all kinds of stuff so what i did was started walking them up and down the roads and people cant resist asking questions and petting a dog so they got to know the dogs real well and started defending them if someone would start to say anything negitive besides my doxie was a much bigger thret

As long as your boy is up to date on his rabies vaccinations and you have all of the necessary paperwork to back up the vet visits, I wouldn't worry to much about it.

You could try talking to this woman and explain that your boy isn't a pit and that he is indeed a boxer puppy. Maybe if you continue to be friendly towards her, she might crack and become friendly towards you. That might be a longshot, but it could happen!!

If it does become a major issue though, I would definitely keep some kind of a journal stating any things that this woman does to you and your family. Just so you have something to fall back on if you need to.

You mentioned this is a new neighborhood, so I am assuming you haven't lived there very long.
Why don't you make up a small introduction on your computer, postcard size would work well, introducing yourselves and your BOXER Mugsy and place them in your neighbors mailboxes. That would alleviate any breed misconceptions the gossip may be starting, as well as make you appear to be a friendly neighbor.

The Flyer idea sounds like a very good Idea. I think it would make them not only see that Mugsy is a "Boxer" but also it may let them know that you are friendly and just wanted to "introduce yourself and your family". I am sure that would gain a lot of respect. I know I would respect it. I would even want to come over and meet you and Mugsy *being the Boxer Stalker that I am.

I hear about Boxers being mistaken for Pit Bulls all the time and it annoys me to think that some countys in certain states "Dade County Florida" where it is illegal to own a Pit may mistake strays, etc. for Pits and put them to sleep.

This is a good idea. I did this when I moved into my house a couple years ago. I know all my neighbors now, except for one house where a new family just moved in. It helps that it's a cul-de-sac in a small town.

I am sorry that this has happened. Some people do make mistakes between the two breeds. I really am sorry that she is spreading things about you in the neighborhood. I would go and talk to her and explain the situation. However, if she continues to spread gossip, you could sue her for deframation (?) of character. Just a thought.

I think the greeting card is a great idea...hopefully your new neighbor will see she made a mistake and move beyong that. Kill 'em with kindness...but keeping a journal as mentioned by Mandy would not hurt either.

I agree that the postcard flyer would be a good idea. Or just talking to your neighbors as you see them and introducing yourself and your "BOXER MUGSY" Not to criticize pitbulls, I know they can be great dogs, but people have a huge fear of them because of a few bad cases that have been highly publicized. So once these people become educated, they will hopefully not be afraid anymore. Although, some people are just afraid of large dogs or dogs in general. And I had dachshunds too, and yes, they are highly territorial and agressive in protecting their area.
