Need Yr Advice Or Opinions Plz

Hi there, at the moment my OSCAR (20 mths old) wont eat his kibble of a morning, ive been told a few different things of what to do eg. drizzle some olive oil over them, or stir thru some tin tuna. I tried both of these and he was eating more than he was without it, BUT some one told me to much fatty food can give the dog pancreatitis (unsure of the spelling!).now im not sure what to do... If some one can give me their advice or opinions on this that would be great.. fr a boxer lover in oz

If you're sure it's not something the vet should check out.....

They just do this. I fell into this trap with Porter. Once they know that if they turn their nose up at their plain food that you'll give them tasty stuff in it....they'll wait a long time! Unless you do want to be creative each time you give your pup food but for me since there were more days that I didn't have time to do anything special (I don't do the BARF thing simply out of laziness I admit). After a while he just got too hungry to wait and gave in.
One thing with Porter was that while he had this 'quiet tantrum' about his plain food....he sometimes got so hungry that he'd throw up. Then he'd eat. LOL Sure makes sense to me....puke=eat...ok works for him anyway! LOL

The other thing I've heard is that if you have scheduled eating times they will learn that at 6am they eat and 1pm they eat and 8pm they eat......and they'll be more likely to not turn their noses up. If you're leaving food down all day long it probably just starts to look unappetizing and with the times they know that if they decide to miss 6am meal...they're not eatin' again till 1pm!! Sounds cruel but their bellies learn fast.

Thanks soupie, but no i dont feed him table scraps and never really have. I have a new 11 wk old white puppy ROXY,and i feed her the puppy kibble and he likes that so i do mix them together. I guess the real question was is it ok to feed the oil or tuna....

If you want to put stuff in his food, Olive oil is great. I normally put about a tablespoon in his dish when I put stuff in his food. Stir it up real good. It's great for his coat!! Makes it awfully shiny!!

I don't use tuna but I have used chicken. If I'm grilling I'll do an extra breast for him and cut it up or shred it and store it in the fridge. I've also done the same with chicken lizzards I mean livers. They smell horrible when ya cook 'em but apparently they're well loved by pups. Run a search on BARF diets and you'll come up with TONS of recipes and ideas for additives to your dog's food.

What breed of kibble do you feed them? You may find that the flavouring has changed a bit in a few certain brands & that is what has happened. I would use the TUNA in vegetable oil or brine. My dogs love it I mix it in with their meals twice a week & they just gobble it up. My babies were kibble fed up until about 12 weeks ago & I have changed their diets now & I dont have any problems with fussy eating, obesity (Molly was about 5kgs overweight!) or with their toilet habits either! so maybe a diet change is what they are looking for.

Hey Bommy, thanks for your help....ive just bought a huge bag of this kibble (stupid i Know!!!!) i think its PRYDES brand , i got it from a local pet and produce place, i also feed OSCAR and ROXY, chicken mince and chicken necks for tea - whats your opinion on that also , i hope im not sounding rude but i find the boxer lovers in the states feed differently to i do and i hope im doing the right thing for my babys. If you could help me out it would be tops!!

Hi Oscar's Mum.

It's never to far I will actually be down that way around Christmas as I am going home to Mum & Dads in NSW.

Our kibble here has a lot of fillers in it as alot do! But there is some organic ones that are a bit more expensive but are very nutritious & appetizing.

I changed Molly & Major's diet after I needed to boost Major's immune system & decided that BARF was teh way to go & I haven't looked back. BUT Barfig isnt for everyone & you do need a bit of extra time for the extra preparation involved or an excellent butcher like I have that will mince everything for you ..

I give my babies a lot of chicken, carcasses, necks, wings the lot! They cant get enough of them. I found taht the BARF diet really has helped their appetites, appearance & bowels! NO MORE MESSY POOS IN THE YARD! which was a bonus!

I've also noticed that my (formally) picky eaters now clean their bowls since I've switched to barf. When they were on kibble, I spent countless hours thinking of ways and preparing mixes just to entice them to eat it!! Hence, switching to a raw diet has been a lot easier for me, and my three dogs are thriving ~ Cathy
