I am a lurker. I get to read all your mail but don't post often. Unless like now I need some input.

Thor go-nads ( testicles) have not dropped. the vet say he is going to need exploratory surgery to find them. I had a vet in where i work and he said I should be very careful of who I have to the surgery. thors head start teacher also said the same thing.

Is there a high rate of deaths cause of this kind of surgery?
that is what i am scared of. He just turned 5 mos on the 28th. time is ticking.

The vet that came in said Ohio state has a vet teaching school and that would be the best place to have it done. ( he went to school there hehehe)

Any feed back would be great.
thanks for taking time to read this.

I can't help you with Ohio State Vet School, BUT

A friend of mine has a bull terrier whose testicles didn't come down either. He is one year old now, and didn't have that operation. Our friend said that since he was not going to breed him, and the vet said that not having the operation will not harm the dog's health, he didn't have th eoperation. That may be an option maybe for you? Just an opinion ;)

Retained testicles can actually be quite a pain.
Literally, for the dog!

Because they are kept nice and warm, instead of nice and cool, retained testicles have a tendancy to play up.
The most common problem is cancer.

I have heard the operation can be tricky, depending on exactly where the testicles are in the body cavity, but so too can a bitch spay be difficult.

I think a good vet who is adept at surgery will be more than capable of removing them.
Ask around.
Find out who is really good at operating.
Vets like any professional, have their strong points so finding a good surgeon shouldnt be too hard.

Leaving them inside him is probably far more dangerous than removal.

oops! should I tell my friend about this? Because his dog is like a year old now and his testicles still aren't there and he's not doing anything about it and he told us that his vet said that nothing bad would happen to the dog! COuld it be the vet didn't want to go thru the operation? That is mean!

Check out the vet school

We just went through an ordeal with my female boxer. We went to the LSU vet school. They have specialists in everything. I think that is where I would go. I would be afraid about cancer. Boxers are very prone to cancer. I was very pleased with the LSU Vet. schhool.

Scrapper had this surgery a year ago. He had one undescended testicle :( I felt very confident with the vet who did the surgery and Scrapper went home with us that same day. He was groggy for a day or so, but soon was up and about, acting like his normal, sweet self.

Neither of C's testicles had descended and we consulted many vets on this (the surgery) in the end our regular vet did it and C was no worse for the wear. From my understanding from a few different vets the surgery for undescended testicles is similiar to a spay. Yes, it takes a bit longer than a regular neuter but is well worth it.

Also, I have yet to find a single vet that would say to leave undescended testicles alone. There is no benefit to the dog what so ever by not having them removed.

Good luck and don't worry, everything will turn out fine I'm sure.

what should I ask a vet?

This thread got my attention because neither of Luke's testicles have descended either and I've been thinking the vet may need to "go in" and get them. I like our vet, but never been faced with any surgical procedure with him. I'd llike to speak with many vets, to see how much experience they have etc.. but what should I look for, or what should I ask? I know about ACE (NOT to use it) but for the rest of the procedure.... "how many have you done?" seems vague to me. I am a worry-wart when it comes to my children's health. There's no such thing as too much info, ya know?
