Need some advice.

Well Jules has had the runs since yesterday afternoon. I can't figure out why. She hasn't had anything to eat except her dog food, which she's been eating ever since we got her. Any advice on what I can do to help her out. She doesn't seem sick cause she is still running and playing. But I know her belly must be hurting so was just wondering what, if anything I could do besides take her to the vet. I thought about giving her a pepto pill but not sure if it is ok for boxers. I give them to my rottie sometimes, just don't want to upset her stomach more though. Should I take her food away for a little while today? Any advice would be helpful.

What are you feeding?...sometimes the digestive system will rebell against foods out of the blue. I would give Jules a break for the day and try with some boiled chicken and rice later. If the diarrhea continues the a vet visit may be in order. Most important to make sure Jules continues to drink water to make sure dehydration doesn't occur.

Add about a tablespoon of plain canned pumpkin to the food. This will help to bind the stool. Careful tho to much pumpkin cause diarrhea. Pepto is ok for dogs. I have soaked white bread with it as a way to administer it.

Another option is charcoal capsules ( by the pepto in the drug store) to help with intestinal upset. All natural and no side effects. That is my first choice when it comes to the dog.

We are feeding her the Chicken soup for dog lovers food. She's still drinking her water. Just can't figure out what's going on. Yesterday morning she was fine and then when I let her out to potty in the afternoon is when it started. She keeps trying to eat alot of grass, so was also wondering if I should let her or not? I haven't been, but if I should I will let her eat a little bit. Just don't want to make her sick or upset her stomach anymore than it already is. Thanks for replying so quickly. I'm going to take her food away until this evening. Then I'll give her some broiled chicken and rice. If that doesn't work she'll be heading to the vets office tomorrow. Thanks for the info I'll be heading to the store today to get some pepto and charcoal capsules.

Oh one more thing I forgot to mention, yesterday I caught her drinking water out of a mud puddle in the back yard (been raining here alot lately). Could that have done it. Just wondering because it started after that. If so then I'm going to be so pissed at myself for not watching her more closely, and at mother nature for making it rain so much.

I think it may be possible that the puddle has upset her stomach or she could have gotten into something without you noticing. I've heard that canned pumkin works and also cooked rice as well. I would just limit her food today and just give her small portions of rice throughout the day. And make sure she has enough water.

Regarding the grass eating. My parents have a cocker spaniel and everytime he eats grass he gets sick and starts vomitting. But my boxers tend to eat grass and it doesn't affect them.

Drinking from a puddle can be a source of coccidia, but the symptoms wouldn't present themselves within a few hours. However, if she has been drinking from puddles in the past, it is possible that the symptoms are just now appearing.

Coccidia can be present in bird droppings and collect in puddles when the rain washes it into a puddle(s).

It can present a problem to young pups and small/tiny breeds since loose stools can progress to diarhhea, resulting in dehydration. Unless the immune system is weak or compromised, juveniles and adults will usually "fight off" the invaders without harm.

If left untreated in those unable to deal with the parasite, bloody diarhhea can result.

In any case, diarhhea that does not respond to a bland diet, or conventional treatments such as pumpkin over a couple of days should be checked by a vet.

A call to your vet, describing the symptoms, should get their recommendation as to how long you should let it go before Jules should be seen.
