My 6 month old fawn KJ is doing great on his training so good "come" works no matter the distaction. I have worked really hard with him day in and day out. However, I would like to teach him some unique tricks but I can't think of any. What are some that your sweeties do and any ideas for me.

Bella can do the basic sit, down, shake hands but also can crawl and give a high five. I've slacked off on the "tricks" portion of her training since we have been putting so much work into obedience. But I think it's time we start working on some more "fun" stuff!

i read in a boxer magazine that you can teach them to "pick" which hand their treat is in! i haven't tried it, but you basically hold up both hands clenched with a treat in one, and have them figure out which one is holding it, using their nose or their paw to "pick." initially, hold both hands flat with the treat, show them which has it, and have them nose it or paw it before giving them the treat. it keeps them occupied, but you can make it more complicated too, to keep them guessing. you can put the treat in one hand (keeping them both behind your back), then hold your fists higher (about shoulder height) depending on how tall your baby stands on their back feet, and play that way... sounded good to me, but i haven't tried it yet.... :)

Bodie picked up shake pretty quickly. After he had it down I added "It's nice to meet you" while offering my hand. Now, if you hold out your hand and say "It's nice to meet you" he'll shake. He also still shakes with "shake". It is fun to show people when they meet him.

If you have a boxer that jumps up, and you're lucky if you don't :), "high five" iis about the easiest trick to teach. Everytime they jump up, throw your hand in front of one of their paws and give the command and praise/click/treat/whatever.

I also like to teach all of my dogs the "touch it" command. All they have to do it touch the tip of your finger, or the end of a stick with their nose. This particular task is a precursor to many things I teach later like fetching, ringing a bell, etc.

Lola's really good at finding a treat under a cup. We get 3 cups, put a treat under one and switch them about :)
Zeb hasn't got the foggiest and knocks them all over and so does Casper but Lola's a clever girl and waits patiently while I switch them. Or actually maybe the boys are cleverer as they get the treat the quickest  We only play this with 1 dog in the room at a time though ;)

We have been learning tricks lately, too. I hope to start therapy dog work with Grumpy soon and the people we visit will want to see some tricks!
Grumpy does the "pick a hand" trick mguiette mentioned... she will also nose or paw any object you point to, we say "touch" for the paw and "target" for the nose. (We learned this in therapy dog class... eventually they will teach them to flip light switches, open doors, etc this way, like service dogs.)

She also knows "say your prayers" - standing on her hind legs, front paws resting on a chair, chin down on her front paws. So cute :) To teach it you just lure the dog with a treat to stand up, paws on the chair (not hard, most dogs do this anyway!) and then pull the treat down to their front paws until the chin touches. Once the get that, you can add "wait" and see how long they can hold the position.

We also taught her to back up (harder than it looks!) by just holding the treat to her nose and stepping forward. At first she would just pivot or move aside, but eventually she got the idea of moving her back legs and from there it was easy. Once they can back up, you can teach your dog to "dance" with you  Stand facing your dog, when you move forward, she moves back, and vice versa. Grumpy loves to dance and she'll follow me sideways now too.

I taught my dog the command "yoga". He always stretches himself when he gets up so that is for me YOGA. Now when I say yoga, he will stretch. And another command is "yammy", this is when he licks his lips. It is quite fun to show to the children these tricks. There are something simple like 'rollover' (but was very hard for my dog to do and he still does not like doing it) , "turn" (kidney bean, the best trick he can do so far and love doing it). I am working on "high five" right now.

You can teach your dog just about any trick just by cueing and treating natural behavior. Mackensie knows smile pretty, shake hands, high five, sing a song (wooo-woo's on command), sassy girl (vocal exchanges), speak, hush, peek a boo, wipe your feet, so sorry, back it up, etc... Now I say just about any trick because we are really stuck on roll over/play dead because she just hates to be on her back! We are also having a hard time with putting treats/toys on her nose and getting her to leave them there until we tell her to!

ahhh tricks are sooo much fun! zoey is 4 months old and has mastered the high five and low five, she will spin with a treat as some help and also roll over while laying. also shake of course. not necessarily a trick, but we are teaching catch with her ball right now.

im sure you do but if you use praise and treats while teaching new stuff, they will do almost whatever you want! zoey gets so excited and happy when she knows she has done what we ask. you can see the satisfaction in her face!
