Jessica (nedra's momma) I was replying to jean when you posted.
I don't understand where you are coming from. I have Never once said anything about neutering not being a good idea! NO i am not looking for a web site that promotes not neutering. I was just asking for more information about neutering. I don't see anything wrong with wanting to be a little more educated on neutering. I am not looking for anyone to convince me one way or the other i just want the factual information.

Are you asking for information on *how* the neuter is done? If so, email me privately and I will let you know. Its a very simple procedure, providing both the testicles are decended.

My email address is: jesajay@mindspring.com

The ace that you are referring to may be acepromazine, a tranquilizer. That's the only thing I would know that is called ace, but I could be wrong. A lot of vets give a tranquilizer to the dog before they give them anesthetic before the neuter. I personally HATE acepromazine.....we used it once on my mom's boxer, Freckles, during a storm (he was and still is terrified of storms) because the vet recommended it. He almost died from it and we didn't even give him the full dosage that was recommended. I'll still never forget when he ran to our house from going "potty" and collapsed on our deck. I'm not sure if the website said that the vet gives the dog ace before the surgery or what, but I know that my vet doesn't. He uses Ketaset (or maybe that's the stuff he uses to put him under?? My brain is fuzzy this morning!! :p) instead. Others on here know a lot more than I do about tranquilizers and things, so maybe they can help you. But one thing I do know, is that in my opinion ace isn't very safe at all. Not something I would want my boxer to have!

Hope this helps!!

Angie,
I apologize. I posted late last night and I was a litlte frustrated. I guess I just misunderstood your intial intentions. It seemed that you had quite a bit of information already at your disposal, yet you were asking for more, and I just didn't understand how the fact that he could die from remaining intact further down the road wasn't making you run out and do it yesterday.

As far as hard cold facts go, I can't offer you any in a "tangeable" format like a website, but there have been many reputable breeders, including a couple of friends of mine, who have lost their senior boys to testicular cancer and prostate cancer. I know that my "a friend of a friend" story isn't what you are looking for, but I want to say that it is a reality and it does happen.

A safe alternative to Acepromazine is Isoflourine. Nedra had Iso when she went in for her spay. Isoflourine is completely safe and Ace should never be used in the boxer. Here are a few links in which you can read about Ace in boxers...

I hope this helps, and I am sorry for the misunderstanding. Good luck in what you decide for your boy.

mj&sams_momma yes that is what i was asking about. I just hadn't seen the whole name of the drug. Thanks.

Jessica (nedra's momma)
I understand your concern. I just wanted to understand for sure that this would be a good benefit to neuter Olli. To give you a little more info. of why i wasn't sure at first is that i actually don't know of anyone that has a neutered dog. Even while i was growing up my family did not neuter males but they did spay females. So knowing that Boxers are more prone to cancers and after reading posts here i decided to look into neutering. I hope that helps you understand a little more of where i am coming from. I just want to do what is best for Olli.
Thank you for the web sites that explains about acepromazine they have been very helpful.
And so i take it this is the only drug i should be concerned about with Boxers? Sorry for so many questions....

Angie,
Ace is the only drug that I know of that is commonly used in other breeds that should not be used in the boxer. I am not sure that there *aren't* others, but Ace is the only one that I have heard of to date. I have heard that shelties have had problems on Heartguard (because their bodies store the Ivermectin at the base of their brain stem causing a possible build up of chemical that can cause seizures and later on, but this has not been seen in boxers), and because I am paranoid, I switched to Interceptor.

These are things you can also ask your vet when you go in for the neutering. I have found that we do best at a vet that "knows boxers" and we are currently with a vet who is an OSU grad as well as 3/4 of his staff. One lady breeds and shows her beautiful brindle male, another does obedience with her's and I just feel much more comfortable when I am asking for their professional opinions knowing that they are up to date on our breed.

I hope this helps, hopefully someone else will post if they know of any other meds that can be harmful to boxers specifically.

I just had my 10mo. boxer neutered (10/25/01). I too believe in the benefits of haveing him neutered, I had started noticing him establishing his dominance over other in tact males. I hope this will cure the problem, any other male that has already been neutered was fine with him. However put two intact males together and your asking for trouble.

The only problem I am facing now is that the Doc. recomended that he not go out to play or get wet for 14 days. Take him out to do his duties on leash and then back in to help prevent infection. I am about to go nuts right now....only 6 days in..... He has so much energy...usually we go for a 3 mile run off leash every day. He is getting roudy in the house now and just wants to wrestle all the time. I don't know what I can do to help him relieve all the built up excietment and energy. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for hearing my take!

And good luck with the neutering! It will be worth it!

Thanks again Jessica!
You have been very helpful. I am not sure how much my vet knows about the Boxerbreed so that is why i want this info.

Wow 14 days to keep him calm and dry!!! That will be a battle for sure with Olli...lol Thanks for posting and sharing your experience. Goodluck with the rest of the time to keep him from getting too rough with play or wet.

Ben,

I wouldn't understand why your boxer couldn't at least go for leash walks with you. I work for a vet and the only thing we tell them is to not give them a bath or let them lick at the sutures until they get removed. But the only reason we tell them about the licking is to try and prevent excessive licking, we know that all dogs are going to lick themselves from time to time. We just inform everybody that so the ones who don't care what their dog does are well aware.

If I were you I'd go ahead and at least try leash walks to see if that doesn't release some of that boxer energy that they build up. And I can totally understand that their energy at times can be overwhelming in a house!! :) There is no harm in doing that whatsoever, and your dog is only going to do what he feels like doing. And he's obviously feeling pretty good to be rampaging through your house!! ;)
