One of our puppies has severe kidney damage and is on a low protein diet of only prescription dog food. It's hard to train her when I'm not sure what to reward her with. Someone at the vet's office suggested making treats out of cooked canned dog food. She already eats dry and canned dog k/d dog food, I'm trying to find something different. I've tried looking on the internet and gourmet dog bakeries, but everything I've seen is extremely high protein. Does anybody know of a low protein treat?

IVD Modified biscuts are along the same line as the k/d food. They are made for renal care and are low in protien. Molly didn't like them very much she thought they tasted like cardboard. But they are the only ones I ever found in a package that were low protien.

PS..I think they are prescription only.

Try rice cakes - my vet recommedend them to me when we were trying to find out if Willie was allergic to protein. He loves them and they are inexpensive!
You can also try carrots, but they weren't a big hit with my pooch.

My two love Granny Smith apples. I cut them in half and pop out the seeds, and they eat them like candy! I know someone who feeds there boxers watermelon too! Mine prefer the apples for the crunch! I would also recommend some healthy cereal. I go to the health food store and get cereal that is sweetened with honey. I used Cherios for training treats. They won't ruin their dinner! Anything that is healthy for you, is healthy for your boxer with an exception of oinions and grapes. I would look for some healthy human cookie recipes. You can find alot of recipes that use natural sweetners. Pumpkin recipes, applesauce recipes etc.

I had two different dogs growing up with special diets -- they couldn't eat regular treats, so we ended up giving them saltine crackers. I'm not sure how that happened, but it worked for us! My Dad had a habit of a eating a few before bed, and the dogs would run to the pantry whenever he went there to wait for their crackers.

Our previious Boxer Hooligan also had kidney disease, we fed him the Hills KD diet, for treats I sometimes gave him small pieces of pasta, and Hills also make a dog biscuit that compliments the various special diets that they make. I cannot remember the name of them but they are Hills Perscription Diet Dog Biscuits. I also have a book at home with lots of home made rescipes for dogs with various dietary requirements. I will get the name of it over the weekend and post if for you.

Thanks everyone, you've given me some new avenues to explore. Adelle, I was encouraged to see that Hooligan lived so long. If you don't mind me asking, at what age was he diagnosed with kidney disease? My little Ginger girl was diagnosed at about 6 months and the vet didn't think she would make it through the summer because her numbers were so bad. My husband and I are trying to be optimistic because although she tires out more quickly than our other two boxers, she can usually keep up with them.

Question - why are grapes not healthy for dogs? Tenaia eats them all the time and absolutely loves them (seedless organic only).
