Hey guys, I have a problem. Our vet just gave us a special recipe to cook and feed to one of our dogs who is overweight. It calls for bone meal. Well we went to the farm store and bought a bag of bone meal for plants. We cooked the food and fed the dogs and then thought, OH NO did we just poison them. Is this type of bone meal the same and if not what should I do?
I appreciate your help in advance!

No, it's nothing like the same. The bone meal you can buy as garden fertiliser is not fit for consumption by man or beast. It is usually contaminated with heavy metals such as lead, and may be a vector for mad cow disease also. Put it on the garden or in the trash - but not in your dog's dinner. If you're going to use bone meal (fresh ground bone is better), then you need to use that which is fit for consumption.

I really appreciate your quick response to this question. Needless to say I feel like an absolute idiot. I never thought that bone meal would not be bone meal. I guess I should have asked the vet before I went off on my own. Thank you again.
