need help please!!!

Hi everyone! My husband gave me my birthday present early yesterday...........a boxer puppy.

there are 2 things I would like suggestions on....1st........my 6 year old snapped at the new puppy last night....granted she ate his food. any suggestions on how to make him like her? I suppose it would just take some time.

2nd....the puppy is 12 weeks old....(I haven't chosen a name yet, it's got to be perfect) I take her out on the lease about every 20 minutes or so to do her 'duty'. but after we come back in she goes everywhere. my question is, what is the best way to housetrain her? someone asked me if I rubbed her nose in it and yelled at her......no, I didn't. what is the easiest method you folks have used?

btw.......she's a brindle and she's BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!

Congrats on the new puppy! We have a 22 week old brindle and she's the best! As I'm sure you've learned, Boxers are very smart and learn very quickly, so he should be able to pick things up no problem! What worked for us with Trinity was being consistent. We always took her out from the same door, and when she went outside we praised her like crazy, you would have thought she invented bread or something! ;) We only reprimanded her when we caught her going in the house, and we would yell "NO!" pick her up and take her outside so she could finish. And she did great. She hasn't had an accident in probably 2 months! That seemed to work for us. Now she goes and sits by the door when she has to go appicon We only have her so I wouldn't really be able to help with the other dog situation. What I've read though is to introduce them slowly, they'll get used to eachother eventually. And I'm sure the older dog what let your new boy know what he can and can't do!

Congrats on your baby!

You might want to separate them for feeding time. That way, there is no issue of this is MY food.

In regard to the potty training issues, you may want to bell train her. Do a search for bell training using the search button near the top right of your screen. It is very effective.

Enjoy your girl - her name will come to you.

The key to potty training for us was consistency and rewarding. EVERY time we took her out and she did her business she was immediately rewarded with a tasty treat and much praise.We did bell train her and it has worked well. As with Trinitysmom, we only made an issue of her accidents if we caught her and we used the same treatment-A loud NO! and scoop her up to finish outside. It was not an overnight process. Patience was key. Also make sure that you clean any spots where she messes with a product called Natures Miracle or she will smell that spot and continue to use it. You can get this at most pet stores.

I agree with every one here....consitancy and patience is the key....the more time you can be at home with her...the quicker she will learn.

I was so lucky to be at home with my 8 week old puppy...I live in a tiny cottage and for two days just laid newspapers arround the floor...just to protect my carpets...I resolved my self to little time for me... pratically 24 hour puppy watch...just 3 hours sleep at night....I did what every one here says to do....it's watch....watch ...watch.....after every sleep....pick up puppy and take outside for toilet...after every meal...the same...again after every playtime...and praise the socks off them when they wee or poo....if they do have an accident and you witness it...pick up the pup...it will immediately stop weeing...say a firm "NO" and take it straight outside....when it starts to wee again...praise it like it's done the most fantastic thing ever...even in the early hours of the morning...clap your hands and make the most fuss ever.


I can tell you...the day will come like it did with my Monty...just two weeks after he came home....I was playing with the tiny tot...he suddenly stood up....trotted over to the door..stumbled down the step...then got to the lawn and wee'd...I watched utterly astounded....then he gambled back into the house and resumed playing.....I was just thrilled to bits...It was just like when my 2 year old daughter got the potty out and went to the loo herself...gosh you have a huge sense of achievement.

Good luck...Boxers are one of the cleanest breeds I know..they will tuck themselves into the biggest bushes to relieve themselves...hardly ever will a boxer relieve it'self on the pavement...well none that I've ever known...ok lads will wee on any lamp post...smashicon ...thats just boys for you and something you have to take on board.

What monty'smum said is so true. Trinity has yet to go to the bathroom on the pavement! It's only grass for her, we've tried to get her to go in the garage, or even on the porch when the weather is bad, nope, rain, hail, snow, sleet, here we come! But you better believe me she does her business and runs back in the house so fast! :LOL:

Firstly congrats on the new addition.
Your elder dog will feel a little threatened. Thats quite normal. You should respect that and give her space etc.
Dont allow the pup to annoy the daylights out of her or he may just get a whack.
Although this dosnt usually cause any damage , some elder dogs can be a bit harsh at first.
Give them time and personal space.
Before you know it they will be best mates and do everything together.

As for potty trianing, NEVER rub an animals nose in his mess.
All that does is teach the animal to LIKE the smell of filth and you will end up with a very dirty dog. :(
Dogs are clean by nature.
He will learn much faster by praise and patience.
All which seems hard at first, but will all fall into place eventually.
There is plenty of info here on BW , ( use the search function) and lots of new puppy owners who will help support you.

thank you for all this help! she did well this afternoon. I took her out about every 20 minutes. She was in the crate last night when we went to bed and poo'd all over. But I'm thinking she was a little off since when she arrived to her new home last night she ran right to Jack's dish and ate his adult food. She is doing good, hopefully I can do this quickly. Good thing we're in the process of remodeling the house and we don't have any new carpet yet. She responds well to NO, and stops doing whatever it is she's doing. I didn't have to do this with Jack, he was 10 months old and trained when I rescued him from the shelter.
