My girl, Layla, has had diarrea for the last many weeks. I don't know what to do. She was on Nature's Variety Prairie for quite some time. Unfortunately she started having diarrea from that, so I did some reading on the web, fasted her with water for 24 hours, and put her on a boiled chicken and rice diet. I did this for a couple weeks, and while her stools were still not complete log shaped, they had a lot more form than when she was on the Nature's Variety Prairie dog food. So then I decided to slowly switch her over to California Natural Chicken and Rice since that has very few ingredients, and I figured that it was pretty much the same thing as me boiling chicken and rice. Well it came back in full force and it's been runny again. There has been no blood, she hasn't lost any weight, and she's been her same goofy self. It's just this diarrea has been aggravating because every once in a while she can't hold it, and I have a nasty mess to clean up off my floor. I had her on a raw diet for about a month, and while her stools were fine, she wasn't a fan of the raw food diet, which is what prompted me to get her back on kibble. The diarrea started probably two or three weeks after she was back on her Nature's Variety Prairie. This was the same food she ate before she began the raw diet. Any suggestions? Please? Thanks all

California Natural's chicken and rice is not the food to feed for diarrhea most times. The fiber content is EXTREMELY low and my dog had explosive uncontrollable diarreah that landed him at the vet's office because it was bloody as well and my girl had HORRIBLE gas. I switched to a food with a 4% fiber content (CA Natural has 1.5% I believe), or try their Herring and Sweet Potato as it has like 3.7%. You can also add some psyllium to the meal to help with this and/or a probiotic.

Good luck.

First, you might have him looked over by a vet and make sure everything is okay. If everything checks out, maybe a grainless food might be something to try. My Roxy can't eat grains, including rice. We use Wellness Core and I'm very pleased with it. It isn't as high in protein as a lot of the others (34% compared to most other grainless averaging 42%). It also might be another food allergy also, such as chicken, but I don't know which Nature's Variety you were feeding. If you are dealing with a food allergy, it can take a lot of time and patience to figure it out. You have to buy different foods with different ingredients, but, since the stool didn't really form solid with the chicken and rice, my first inclination would either be the chicken or the rice, or it even could be both. So, in my opinion, I would start from there. Good luck!
