Can anyone give me any help in promoting my desire to be a foster family to a boxer rescue? My husband is really concerned that by bringing an unknown dog into the family it could create havoc in the house. We also have two skin kids, ages 10 and 8. They are really good with our Buster (2 yr. fawn boxer boy). But they are kids and can really get Buster going on a tear! I think it would just be fantastic for all parties involved. I'm a stay at home mom so I have time to give and I think it would be great for all parties involved (My deep hope is that Buster would love having a fellow boxer around as well!) I just adore the breed and really want to do this. Any suggestions, or have any of you ever been in the same situation??? We also had a boxer prior to Buster (Sugar Ray - Rainbow Bridge at 12 years). He was my husband's best buddy!!

fostering

I can't begin to tell you what a rewarding experience fostering boxers is! To see these poor babies come from shelters, etc and blossom into healthy adoptable pets in one of the most satisfying things I've ever done. I can understand your husband's concerns, you sure don't want anything negative to happen to Buster or your skin-kids. My gang gets bordatella 2x/year to help prevent kennel cough just to cya. And I separate the new fosters from current dogs (personal and fosters) for a while to make sure they aren't contagious with something nasty and then introduce them to the others slowly. Working with a reputable boxer rescue helps because they can give you support, advice, etc with your fosters.
Crating and separation reduce a lot of the risks and common sense covers a lot, too. You wouldn't leave your young children with any unknown dog, for example. But most boxers I've seen can't be with small kids not because of aggression but because of the wiggle factor! Dog-savvy young 'uns quickly learn to stay away from "happy butt". :) I've fostered about 40 boxers in the 3+ years since I've been in rescue and absolutely think it's the most worthwhile thing that you can do. The biggest risk is wanting to adopt them yourself!

How to get Hubby to say yes to fostering

Cook him and his best buddy a filet mignon and king crab leg dinner and ask him during dinner with his buddy there. How can he say no? LoL It worked for me! :)

How I brought in mine.

I bring them in the house in the middle of the night after a rescue run, or when he's at work. Suprise!! It's worked for me, he doesn't have the heart to ask them to leave after I share their sad stories.

We have 2 rescues. One was very adoptable a young healthy 3 yr old male that I had showed my husband on petfinder.com. He thought he looked great but was reluctant about bringing an adult boxer into our home. I said well we'll just go and meet him and see how his temperament was. It was instant love for my husband. He was so taken by him. He said oh he's coming home with us. He did!
The next guy was a senior in an animal shelter. Once again I said we were just going to go and have a look. He was so pitiful my husband was heartbroken by the sight and condition he was in. He was at least 20-25 lbs underweight and had large infected bedsores as well as cataracts just a sad mess he was in. Well the long and short, he ended up becoming a member of or family also.
I think once an animal softie always an animal softie.
We are full up so I am banned (self imposed) from actually going and meeting any more boxers in shelters. We currently have 3 boxers. I am forever tripping on one of them.
