Necessary vaccinations...

We have kept Roxy on a restricted vaccination schedule. We were given some bad advice and did not vaccinate her for Parvo. Thankfully, she was not exposed.
Now we are expecting a new puppy and I have convinced the breeder to not vaccinate this puppy with the combo shot that I will take care of his vaccines myself.
I know for sure that Bortadella is out of the question- he won't be in a kennel anytime soon and the one for lyme disease is unnecessary as it isn't prevelant in our area.
Advice and recommendations from those experienced in this area would be greatly appreciated!

I'd absolutely do the Core vaccinations. I do not believe in over vaccinating, but I would (and did) definitely do the core vaccinations on a puppy up through a year old and then I personally stop. Parvo, distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza and I personally also do Cornovirus. And then of course Rabies at whatever age your county requires it to be in compliance with the law.

The CORE vaccines are Parvo, Distemper, and Rabies... nothing else. Rabies isn't done until at least 6 months old though, so young puppies would get JUST parvo and distemper (if you're going the minimalist route that is ). After the puppy series of Parvo and Distemper, and then Rabies at 6mo-1yr, the only vaccine that my dogs get for the rest of their lives is the Rabies shot (every 3 years), but only because it is required by law.

Rabies vaccine -

Is 6 months really the cut off? Rocky had his rabies vaccine at 16 weeks....per the vet. I didn't challenge it at all and he's been fine since then. What is the standard? 24 weeks? Would it be different depending on what country/state you are in?

Thanks, CaneyCreek- yes it is the very minimal vaccine schedule that we are trying to obtain. We were not successful in convincing our first breeder to hold of on vaccinating but this time we were, so our little guy will only be getting the core vaccines.

BxrMommieNAZ- parainfluenza is just a flu shot... not sure if you already knew that. I don't vaccinate myself or my family for the flu so the dog is out as well. Chances of a dog catching the flu are relatively minimal.

Be careful with that advice on Rabies (and out here Core vaccines are considered the 5-in-1, the non core are the lepto, corona, etc), Rabies being done depends on the county. My county requires it to be done at 12 weeks old which is when you legally have to register the dog in our county and if you don't do it at 12 weeks old the vet is required to notify the county that you're out of compliance with the law, the dog can be taken away or at the very least you are fined heavily and then required to get the dog vaccinated ASAP or they will take it from you. So when you have to get Rabies depends on what county you live in in the USA.

Yes, I know what it is, it can also kill young puppies. We do the 7-in-1 as a puppy and then the 1 year booster and then no more ever again except for Rabies. I don't over vaccinate by any means, but I'd prefer to protect them from what they need to be protected from at that age. I do not get the flu shot for myself or my son but I do for my dog during the first year of life.

Correction, in looking at it the core vaccinations according to the AAHA is Rabies, Parvo, distemper and Adenovirus. I did do parainfluenza if for no other reason as I refuse to give them myself and my vet doesn't do individual ones so it's just an all in one. and then we did Rabies at 12 weeks, then again 1 year later, and then it won't be given again for the 3 years.

Where we are puppies are suposed to get their first rabies vaccine at 8 weeks. We have a puppy care plan and are only getting the core vaccines which are rabies, Distemper Parvo.
