Naughty Jess Wetting The Bed

:( hello everybody i have a problem with my jess she has been very naughty over the weekend we went out for an hour and when we came back she had been on our bed and wet herself on it so she got a light telling of so yesterday i went and washed the bedding in the laundarette came home and went shopping came back to see the bedding over the hallway floor and she had wet on the duvet again at this point we were very angry:mad: so she got a smack and put out the back and left there for over an hour so luckily enough we had a spare duvet and thought we were okay so last night we had forgiven her only gor her to go upstairs after being out and deliberately wetting the bed again now she is still in the bad books and is in the kitchen indeffinately does anybody have an answer to my question as i am very :mad: angry at her and confused by her behaviour i would be very happy at your suggestions or have you got a dog that has done this and why? i would ask JESS but unlucky for me she cant speak i feel like i am banging my head against a wall as she had been told of twice and punished for it but still done it a third time

How old is Jess? How long has she been housebroken. Is she crate trained?

If Jess is crate trained, your problem is solved. Put her in the crate while you are out. It sounds like it might be a case of separation anxiety. Years ago we had a dog that would scatter the contents of every trash basket around the house when he was left alone.

In order to correct the behavior, you have to catch your dog "in the act". When you come home to the results of any problem behavior it is already too late to do anything about it.

Jess has no idea why she was scolded or "smacked". The only thing you will accomplish by those actions is to teach Jess to dread your return. If she greets you at all, it will be with her tail or nub tucked down in fear.

If this is a new behavior in an older dog, it could indicate an urinary tract infection. That is certainly not a punishable offense.
If it isn't a health issue, then the crate is the best solution for both of you.

Read some of the threads about crate training, the do's and don'ts such as don't put your dog in the crate with a collar, and don't use the crate as a jail to punish your dog. You want it to be a safe haven for your dog, a den so to speak. Any owner with a crate trained dog will tell you that it is the biggest single favor that you can do for both your dog and you.

I seriously doubt that Jess understands why she was scolded and smacked. To try to correct a dog for past events whether five minutes or five days ago is counterproductive. They do not understand why or what they are being punished for.
