Hi,
At work so just a quick little post.
Not had a chance to get on for a while but its just been one thing after another with Dexter. I'll be writing other posts about our recent worries with him later when I'm online at home but thought I'd post quickly about this.
He is nearly 7 months now and is scratching himself to bits. Touch wood he does not have bald patches etc and does not seem to be making his skin red raw...but he just constantly scratches. The only bit that does seem to be red and now scratched and bleeding is the areas around his face - Just below his eyes, under his chin, along his bottom jaw etc. I feel helpless watching him. The vet suggested allergies and from what I've already read I think its prob a strong possibility. He had itchy sore ears a while back (mainly the ear flaps) and vet said it was an ear infection. seemed to clear up under medication but now they are getting red again so I think it might also be linked to allergies.
Anyway, we are trying to change his diet. we have been recommended James Wellbeloved food. Has anyone tried this?
www.wellbeloved.co.uk

We have started him on it (gradually mixed into his food) but he has only been on less than a few days so obviously wont see any change for a few weeks. Anyone think this seems ok?

Also, we had sometimes fed our last dogs (miniature dachshunds)on Nature Diet
www.naturediet.co.uk

They loved it but we have only bought it once or twice for dexter. I weas wondering if we should work between the two. (Hate just giving him dry food all the time)
Anyway, has anyone tried Nature Diet? Or can anyone give any opinions on it?

It just seems like one thing after another with Dexter.Love him to bits but seem to be back and forth at the vets more than I have with any other dog/pet.
Such a worry to us.
Any advice, opinions would be great thanks.

PS. So much for a short quick post :)

Princess is 1yrs and 2 months right now...I just tok her to a dermatologist yesterday that cost an arm and a leg! It sounds like she may have the same as your little guy! The thing is that it turned out to not be her food. She's been on hypo-allergetic food for months now and she still has the scratching. She had a skin scraping done twice and they found nothing, and also took some hair from her coat to see if she has any fungus(still waiting for those results). But the Dermatologist says that she feels that it's environmental allergies...indoor and outdoor. So now she's taking antibiotics to clear her severely scratched(infected)skin, and antihistamines.....
Hope that answers some of your questions!!!

I'm not too sure about the James Wellbeloved food. I am looking at the Adult Maintaince Lamb and Rice food and the first few ingredients are:

INGREDIENTS: Rice, lamb meat meal, ground whole barley, fresh lamb, lamb fat,

Ingredients are listed by weight. So looking at those there is more Rice and Barley in this food than lamb meat. It should be the other way around. The meat sources should be more than the grains.

You might want to consider a basic homecooking diet with a few ingredients and work up. This way you could monitor the dogs reactions.

The Honest Kitchen makes a grain free dehydrated food that is very good. Also Essex Cottage Farms makes food that you can add meat to as well. :) You might want to do a search about "home cooking" to get some more info.

I use Burns organic and Nature Diet.

Nature Diet is hypoallergenic. On the fish and rice the ingredients are:

Ocean Fish 60% (cod and haddock)
Rice min 20%
Seaweed, vitamins and minerals
Vitamin A
Vitamin D3
Vitamin E

Does this sound like a good food?

Since I started Star on it her coat has changed. It is really soft and shiny. I add 100g of Nature Diet to her Burns.
