Well we finally made a decision....TOTW! :)

After going to three different stores and talking to lots of people and of course you all, TOTW seems to be the best choice not only for ingredients but overall price as well. I can actually get it a local feed store for a great price!

Thanks for all great suggestions!

So we have been feeding Chops Natures Recipe - Lamb and Rice and he is doing just fine on it. But I think a better quality food would be better...it is a 3 on the DGA website. And I am thinging a 4 or better would be better for him.

I have looked around and done quite a bit of research and narrowed it down to TOTW, Wellness or Natuaral Balance. He would have to be on the fish formulas of all...he doesn't do well with chicken.

I guess my question is: which one? They are all about the same price, and I can get all three of them pretty easily...NB or Wellness easier than TOTW. Also since NB doesn't have the correct protein level I think it would be more expensive since I would have to add wet food to it and I don't like to feed wet too often.

I just want to feed the correct kind of food. What are your thoughts? Thanks for advice. Also all the bags say to feed 3-4 cups a day and I thought that was a bit much because it was better food...doesn't 2 1/2 - 3 sound a bit more right?

My dog has a Chicken allergen. Does your dog have one also? Will your dog be able to eat a food that doesn't have chicken as a protein source but uses chicken fat?

He seems to be doing quite well on the TOTW. I choose the Pacific Stream formula because of the chicken issue and he absolutly loves it! Not too sure if he is allergic or not, but the rescue said that when they fed him a food with chicken as the first ingrediant is seems to give him a bit of an upset tummy. He as always been a picky eater and he loves this! I plan on rotating between this one the the High Praire one and it has chicken meal in it but this doesn't seem to bother him too much.

I would maybe try the Pacific stream formula and see how it goes. Also Natural Balance has a few without chicken in them.

Good luck!

Wellness

We are just switching Rocky over to wellness puppy - and are down to 1/3 IAMS (I know, shoot me - horrible pick from a new dog owner) and 2/3 wellness. So far soo good. Expensive is the only issue i have with it. You could get a 40lb IAMS for 30 bucks, this 15lb wellness puppy is 35-40 bucks.

I think Rocky is more full on the wellness than on the IAMS. He was chowing down 3 meals a day with IAMS - very rarely leaving anything. We switched him over to twice a day, same amount and now that most of it is wellness he's not finishing everything anymore. Instead of 3 cups/day we'll prob move down to 2 once he's all the way over to wellness.

He's 45 lbs, nearly 6 months old. Doesn't look fat at all - loves eating - food, treats, etc.

So far so good with our wellness experience - minus the pocketbook!! hehe

Totw

Lucy Lu our 10 month old Boxer loves the TOTW Pacific Stream. She tried the no grain Canadae and the Wellness Just for Puppy and even though she liked them, they gave her very soft stools. The only problem with TOTW is that she eats it so fast that she would throw up a bit, sometimes. We solved that by putting a tuna can (unopened) in her dish to make her work around it while eating. No problems since, but once she starts eating, she eats till it's gone. Main thing , very firm stools. We are going to have her try the TOTW Bison and Venison after she finishes her second big bag of the Pacific, just for variety.

One more thing to be aware of...This is from the Dog Food Analysis website...

We note that this is a fish meal, but are not able to locate a statement on the manufacturer's website guaranteeing the use of ethoxyquin-free protein sources (Ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative, commonly added to fish meal ingredients and that is banned or heavily regulated in the human food industry due to the belief that it is carcinogenic).

I also switched to this food last summer but once I found this out I couldn't feed it anymore. We feed Wellness Core Ocean and we are now trying EVO Herring and Salmon

Good Luck.
