Naming Question

Okay, I've got my show quality puppy (flashy brindle male, currently 3mos old), I've registered him for ring classes next month. I just need to figure out what to name him for his registration. I've been showing horses for years and you usually pull names from father and mother. What do I name him?

For the most part, you can name a registered dog whatever you desire.
It is not required or necessarily common to name after the dog's parents.
You cannot copy a registered name from another dog, at least, not verbatum.
Usually you need to have permission to use the kennel name from the breeder, especially if their kennel name is registered.
I always recommend something unique.. nothing too common....such as a simple, single name...like *Buddy*, because if you do, it will most likely come back with a roman numeral behind it that the AKC has added. AKC also has rules about not using names like....*Champ*, among a few others....and they also have a limitation on the number of characters in a registered name.

Registration

Has he been registered yet? Typically a breeder will prename the show puppies because they will want to have their kennel name on the puppies they think will be very nice and then the new owner gets to pick the call name such as Buster or whatever the name you will be calling him. So if he hasn't been registered yet then you get to pick the full name and like mentioned before there is no need to name it after the parents it makes no difference however sometimes if a sir or dam is a very popular dog or bitch then sometime people will try to put some of their name in the puppies name so that people will know they are related but it makes no difference. Also many times the whole litter will have a theme so everyone will have a sports name or something like that so that as they are winning in the show ring people can see they are all from the same litter. So there are lots of different things you can do.. Good luck.
