Does anyone know what kind of steroids they use for allergies?

Also, what is the difference between an allergy shot and a steroid shot?

Thanks!

I can't remember the name for the steroid shot they gave Samson. He had an almost fatal reaction to his distemper shot and they had to give him a steroid shot. I believe an allergy shot is just for preventive treatment for allergies but I am not sure. They used the steroid shot because of Samson's allergic reaction.

Prednisone is the most commonly used steroid, I believe.

An allergy shot is like a "vaccine" for allergies. It's custom made for whatever your dog is allergic to. Allergy shots have to be administered very often, sometimes daily, and it can take months before you notice any improvement. But the goal is for the dog to eventually become less sensitive to those allergens.

A steroid shot is given after a reaction has occured; basically, an anti-inflammatory.

I give Milo Cyclosporine during his really bad allergy seasons and it does great with him. It is kind of expensive. We had to go to this because or doctor didnt want to keep him on any kind of heavy steroids due to his heartworms and weight.
Steeler takes Pretizone during his bad allergy seasons. However, neither of them are on a constant allergy medicine all year long.
