Nails???????????

Mya is still young (14 weeks), but her nails grow pretty quick. I've been trying to trim very small amounts often to get her used to he feeling of having her nails trimmed.

I've found the process works best if I do it about 20 minutes after we get back from the park and she's already half asleep.

I plan on getting a dremmel tool and trying it out in the near future so that I won't have to deal with te sharp edges left from clippers.

We had the same problem with Hugo but our trainer suggested that we de-sensitize him to the clippers. This meant that for weeks we did not clip his nails (he went to the groomers or the vet for that) but that we had to slowly introduce just the idea of the clippers. So we first put them out around the house for him to just see but we did not use them or touch them to him. We put them on the floor beside him when he was eating or laying down chewing a toy. When he was comfortable with the sight of them we progressed to touching his toes with our hands while the clippers were laying on the floor beside him. If he was good and did not fuss he received lots of praise and treats. When he was comfortable with that consistently for 2 weeks we moved on to touching the clippers to his toes but not clipping the nail. Again lots of praise and treats if he was good and stayed calm. Then we progressed to clipping one nail a day. Once he was able to handle one nail a day for 2 weeks we moved to several nails a day and then eventually the day came when all 4 feet could be done. We did have days when he would actually revert back to stressing out over having his nails clipped and when this happened we had to stop and start all over again at the beginning stage and again progressing each time he was comfortable. It was a long process. I think it took nearly 5 months but he now lets us cut his nails.

Thanks everyone...I guess I'll get a Dremmel, that sounds like the easiest and quickest way to get this problem solved. Now to his "diaper rash" as I call it. He has some red blotches on his belly near his penis and above it on his stomach. Anyone think it could be more than just an allergy?

Hello. My Neva walks with me so frequently that I have only had to clip her nails a few times. The concrete sidewalks sand them down pretty well. When I do cut her nails, I wait till she is pooped from playing and sleeping soundly. I just clip em while she naps.

I don't have a big problem with Jixxer, but w/ My pitt/lab mix, he hates it. So, now I put him b/t my legs and on his back and lock him in. My fiancee will rub his belly and talk to him and he fights a little, but knows he can't get anywhere so he gives up.

I'm really glad to read this forum.

Beau and I were at puppy school on Tuesday and the trainer took us to the dog grooming section where we were going to be taught how to trim the dog's nails.

UGH...what a nightmare.

Beau hates having his nails done, he's terrified, and he turned his head on the nasty groomer (who was not good with him at all). She wasn't impressed with his behaviour, Beau was upset and I was upset.

Any idea where I can get a dremmel in Ontario????

I, personally was scared to do Emma's nails. I always brought her to the vet to have her nails clipped. Worked out great for both of us.
