Mega's nails seem way to long to me (even though the vet said they were fine). I've been looking on the BW gallery and on websites re: nails and they are just too long. How do I get them to the right lenght without cutting the quick? I know the longer they grow, the longer the quick is. Thanks!!

I would suggest a Dremel nail grinder. There are also other brands but I get the dremel "nail kit" for $23 on Amazon and I love it. You don't have to really worry much about the quick with it and its quick and easy to use. It doesn't bother Cortes at all - he just tries to eat it occassionaly. I think it was one of the best investments I've made for him.

about what age do you need to start really trimming the nails... austin is 9wks. and the breeder was just using a regular nail clipper b/c their nails were so think.. now i think it would hurt him to do that.. just wondering

We were trimming them from the day we brought Oskar home. (8 Weeks) We prefer short nails. We cut them once a week with nail trimmers and then use the dremel to smooth the edges.
If you start taking a bit off each week they will naturally shorted in time.

Made me laugh, just close your eyes..huh:

"When you are ready to cut, and you are sure you aren't at the live, pink part of the nail, just close your eyes and SQUEEZE HARD!!!
Just kidding. To cut the nail, be decisive and make a smooth, quick squeeze on the handle while holding the trimmer steady. Don't try to "pop" the end of the nail off; it will fall away on its own.

I also have the vet do their nails when their in for a check up, although the dremel sounds like an idea I might have to try out.
