nail filing or clipping?

i clip tiggers when he is asleep then file the roughness away - thats fun if he wakes up all he wants to do is chew the file so i wait for the snoring then finish the job.

brandy on the other hand we cant touch her feet - never have been able to either but i'm trying to clip them when she's asleep 2 wks ago she let me do 1 :o and that was it very very grumpy with mummy oops - lucky her nails seem to wear down by themselves fairly well but i will still keep trying

I use a Dremmel, too. Dieter was never too keen on the clippers, but then one day I clipped the quick and every time I pulled out the clippers after that he would RUN! Now, we file 'em down with the Dremmel. It took a while to get him used to it, but he's pretty cooperative with it now.

Our two takes care of their own nails, we've never clipped or dremmeled... they play/walk on concrete half of the day...

We did take BooBoo to Petsmart once to have them clip for us, but they said that it wasn't needed, that his nails looked just fine. Lucky us I guess...

Just a touch off topic but having never had a dog before Cypress I didn't realize nails needed to be taken care of so often. They got incredibly long! I don't know what to do with them. How do I get them to shorten back up? I feel bad for him cause I think they may be uncomfortable for him. Any suggestions? I think he would handle a dremel ok.

Great Site for Dremmel

When I first heard of using a dremmel on a dog, I didn't know where to start. Another thread had this site link. The lady has dobermans and had great information. It let me know how to dremmel on Kikka's black nails without going to far. Hope it helps you like it did me.

Natural file...

With Abby, we have never had to clip her nails. She is two and a half, and loves to walk on the asphalt road (on leash) and on the cement driveway. Her nails are smooth and look perfect all of the time.

Wilson... well, those little knives, I mean claws, hare sharp little things that slice through skin very easy!
