From the first day you came to live with me, I knew I likely wouldn't have you long. You'd lived a whole life before I ever knew you. We were blessed with more than three years together, and I wouldn't trade those years for anything in the world.
I wish there was more I could have done for you. I knew your old joints were painful, but you did so well for so long with Adequan and Metacam. It makes me so sad that I was able to spend so little time with you in the last few months. I knew you would be better off living with Mom and Dad, rather than being lonely at my house while I spent long hours at school. I came home every chance I got to see you, but it still doesn't seem like enough. Mom and Dad didn't want to worry me, so they didn't tell me you were having so much trouble walking. When you couldn't get up or down the two steps to the back yard, I knew I owed it to you to stop the pain.
Gretel, you are so special to me. I gave $75 to the rescue for you, but would give a million times that if I could have you back free of pain. You never held a grudge, and you loved everyone. I know I joke that you look like a potato with legs, but to me you're my beautiful girl and I didn't mean it as an insult. I know I'll wake up at nights for a long time expecting to hear your snoring. You were my best study buddy, and you were always there for me when I'd had a bad day. We were eternally amused by your bizarre love for canned green beans, and we'll likely always refer to cut canned green beans (not French style!) as "Gretel beans."
Today was one of the most difficult days of my life. I made the decision days ago, but the temptation to put it off was almost unbearable. I knew it was selfish, and it wouldn't be fair to you to prolong your pain. I'm so glad I got to hold you as you died, and I'll never forget the feel of your soft fur or the smell of citrus shampoo on the top of your head. Right now my heart aches, but I know that one day we will meet again. I miss you, sweet dog, but there are lots of others there to greet you. Go run and play like you were never able to while I knew you. I love you, and I miss you so much.
