stay positive

I want to pull her out of there and take her to another hospital, but I'm trying to be patient at least until they get the blood results back. I also don't want her to have to go through a third IV stick.

I understand your frustration and your pain. Two days after I adopted my puppy boxer at six weeks she was not eating and vomiting and very lethargic. She spent an entire week back and forth between my vet during the day and the hospital for the nights and weekend. It was very hard not to see her and to wait for answers. She was finally diasgnosed with camplobacteriosis (sp?)...also known as "campy". She only had a 50/50 chance because she was only 6 weeks old. Campy can have similar symptoms as parvo so make sure your dog is tested for both if the docter suspects parvo. I am not sure about the green stuff though. I think your dog is older and has already developed more so that may help. I know it is hard to think about your puppy getting another iv stick but that is probably what your puppy needs to keep it getting nutrition and liquids. When my puppy finally came home she had shave markings on all four legs due to all of the iv's she received. It is essential though I am sure especially when they are not eating and drinking. Stay positive and I am sure that your puppy will be ok.

Another update - with good news

Hi again -

Sorry for the long delay in posting an update on Lokie. As if I needed anymore to deal with, I went down with a nasty flu Thurs-Sun.

But the good news...Lokie got to come home from the hospital! Her x-rays are showing that the pneumonia is resolving somewhat, although slower than the vets would hope.

Her cultures from the trach wash came back yesterday, showing bordetella and mycoplasma infection. So the vets decided to add doxycycline (sp?) to her current regimine of clavamox and aminophylline. We're going back in another 7 days for follow up x-rays.

They also ran a distemper pcr, which could take up to 3 weeks to get the results. I don't think she has distemper, because she has not had bloody stool, but they still think there is enough reason to keep her fairly isolated until we know for sure.

She used to go to doggy daycare a couple of days per week, but I'm planning to keep her out of there for at least a month until I am sure she is not going to pass anything to any of the other doggies. Also, her energy level is still not 100%. She used to play 1 hr, nap 2 hrs. Now she plays 30-45 minutes, naps 3 hrs. (these are just estimates based on only 1 1/2 days of having her at home). So she definitely needs some R&R, but we are hoping that she is on the mend and will make a full recovery.

This has been such a challenging week. I still feel shocked that our first vet gave us a HEART FAILURE diagnosis when she actually had pneumonia. If we had taken her home with the heart medicine, well, I just don't want to think about what would have happened.

That's all I can think of for now. One week and $3000 later, we have our puppy back! Thank you all so much for all of your support and good wishes.

Harley, Chopper and I are very happy to hear that Lokie is getting better. I'm sorry to hear about your experience with your vet. I work at a vet on the weekends and we always allow people to come back in the treatment area to visit their animals. We have also had a lady stay 2 hours with her dying dog in one of our exam rooms. Going with your instinct was a wonderful decision and thankfully not giving Lokie medication that she doesn't even need. I'm sure with all your hugs and kisses she will be better in no time.
Wishing Lokie a speedy recovery and hugs to you :)
Please keep us posted!

Please Be Patient

Please Find A Doctor You Are Comfortable With, I Have 3 Boxers, And Over The Years Have Had All Kinds Of Things Happen, But The Surprise Of My Life Was In Early December, My Male Boxer, Jb, Was Unable To Urinate....after Alot Of Pain And Waiting We Found He Had "bladder Stones" Which Are The Same As Humans Kidney Stones....poor Guy Had To Have Emergency Surgery, 3 1/2 Hours To Remove All 18 That He Had. As If That Was Not Enough He Also Has Been On Antibiotics Since, A Very Strict Diet, And Is Just Now Back To Normal. If I Had Not Been Trustful With My Vets, I Would Really Wanted To Kill Someone Before The 5 Days He Was In The Hospital Would Have Elapsed. I Owe His Life To These People, But They Were Nothig But Great, Even At 4:00 A.m. As We Took Specimens And Put In Cathaters, Yes We I Had To Help Him At That Time Of The Morning, There Was Noone Else To Help With The 115 Pound Baby!

Please Know My Prayers Are With You, I Know How We Can Be With Our Pets....
