Hi there, well I am new to boxer world, and new to boxers. I have a question.. My boxer is 12 weeks old and his tail was docked (slanted). It looks horrible and could be cut shorter, he is always trying to bite it. Is it too late to have it docked again? Does the vet do this?

Thanks

Oh, gee that's too bad. As far as I know the vet does this as soon as the pups are born or shortly thereafter. I don't know about getting it done again but I'm sure there are people here who could help you. I think it maybe a bit late but I'm not an expert. Hope his little nub comes on ok.

It could be re-docked but at this point would be an amputation - the nerves etc. are fully developed now as opposed to the first few days after birth. Tail amputations can be difficult to heal, as well. If it is causing him pain or is constantly raw/breaking open at the end, an amputation may be something to consider - if it's just unattractive I'd probably just live with it.

I had to have my dog's tail redocked as it was done with scissors and caused nerve damage. He is fine now. He didn't seem too upset about the surgery..it was wearing a cone for 2 wks that was the worst. He hated that thing.
